Manchester United youngster JJ Gabriel is reportedly close to completing a move to Real Madrid, bringing an end to months of uncertainty surrounding his future at Old Trafford.

The 16-year-old forward is currently in Madrid, where he is working with a personal trainer while arrangements for his proposed switch to the Spanish giants are being finalised.

Although Manchester United sources maintain that there has been no direct contact between the two clubs, people familiar with the situation believe Gabriel’s departure is imminent.

Daily Mail Sport first reported in September that Real Madrid were increasingly confident of securing the highly rated youngster.

Gabriel has since obtained a European Union passport through his mother’s Cypriot heritage, removing a potential obstacle to his move to Spain.

Gabriel Expected to Join Real Madrid Castilla

Under the proposed arrangement, Gabriel is expected to feature for Real Madrid Castilla, the club’s reserve team competing in Spain’s third division.

He is also expected to participate in the UEFA Youth League.

His potential departure represents a major loss for Manchester United, where he established himself as one of the academy’s most promising prospects.

Gabriel made history with the club’s youth sides, becoming the youngest player to appear for the Under-18 team.

He was just 14 when he made his debut, scoring twice in the match.

He also progressed to the Under-21 side, where he continued his scoring record.

Contract Dispute Triggered Manchester United Exit

The situation escalated in September when Gabriel and his representatives submitted a request for his academy contract to be terminated.

Manchester United immediately rejected the request, although there was initially some hope that an agreement could be reached to convince the teenager to remain at the club.

However, Gabriel has not returned to United since the dispute emerged.

The youngster, who celebrated his 16th birthday last month, is regarded as one of the most exciting emerging talents in football.

Family Seeks Greater Development Opportunities

Gabriel’s family’s decision to pursue an exit has reportedly been influenced by concerns about Manchester United’s sporting decline since Sir Alex Ferguson’s departure.

The club has not won the Premier League title since 2013, and a source close to the family previously indicated that United were considerably behind several leading European clubs in terms of their current standing.

The source described United as being ‘far away’ from Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, as well as domestic rivals Arsenal and Manchester City.

The family reportedly wants Gabriel to develop alongside some of the best players and within an environment capable of maximising his potential.

Family Background and Previous Barcelona Interest

Gabriel’s full name is Joseph Junior Andreou O’Cearuill. His father, Joe O’Cearuill, reportedly changed the family surname to make it more commercially attractive.

His father has been described as an ambitious and demanding parent who has played a central role in decisions concerning his son’s football career, including the move to secure his departure from Manchester United.

Barcelona had also attracted the family’s interest in the past.

Gabriel previously visited the Spanish club’s facilities and was photographed alongside forward Lamine Yamal.

The teenager is represented by prominent football agent Ali Barat, who is helping guide his career.

Although a move to Real Madrid’s senior team would still be some distance away, the expectation is that he could eventually develop into a top-level player in LaLiga.

Rafael Nadal Appointed to Real Madrid Board

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have confirmed that tennis legend Rafael Nadal is set to join the club’s board of directors.

The club’s board met on Wednesday and agreed to submit Nadal’s appointment to the general assembly of delegate members for ratification.

Nadal, who retired from professional tennis in 2024, finished his career with 22 Grand Slam singles titles, including a record 14 French Open championships.

In a statement, Real Madrid described him as one of the greatest sporting legends in history and one of Spain’s most admired and internationally recognised athletes.

The club also expressed its pride at welcoming Nadal, highlighting his sporting achievements and personal qualities as valuable additions to its board of directors.

Gabriel Still Featured in Manchester United Official Materials

Despite his absence from the club since the contract dispute, Gabriel was included in Manchester United’s official first-team photograph published last month.

His name also appeared on the back of Tuesday’s Roma match programme, although he was not included in the club’s Champions League squad.

United head coach Carrick previously addressed the situation, emphasising the importance of protecting young players and considering their welfare.

Speaking about Gabriel, Carrick said: ‘He’s a young boy, he’s 15 and the biggest (thing) for me definitely and as a club point of view is looking after our younger players – their welfare, their wellbeing, their exposure.

‘And I think all of us we’ve got to be really conscious of that, really, in this situation.

‘As a club, for sure, we’re all involved in those conversations.

I just think we’ve got to be very careful of that.’
