Heavy Rain and Thunderstorms Continue to Affect Eastern South Africa with Warnings Issued for Multiple Provinces

As many holidaymakers are heading back home, the eastern regions of South Africa are still facing heavy rain and thundershowers.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that these weather conditions will persist for the time being.

Expected Rainfall and Thunderstorm Warnings

Tokelo Chiloane, a forecaster with SAWS, provided an update on Tuesday, indicating that an 80% chance of showers and thundershowers is expected in several provinces, including Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, and KwaZulu-Natal.

Meanwhile, other provinces will see lighter rainfall, with a 60% chance of rain in some areas and as low as 30% in others.

Yellow and Orange Weather Alerts

There are several weather warnings in place due to the severity of the conditions.

Zululand District Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal has been issued an Orange Level 5 warning, with the possibility of flooding.

The northern and central parts of KZN have also been given a Yellow Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms.

For areas like Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and parts of the Free State and Northern Cape, a Yellow Level 2 warning for thundershowers has been issued.

What to Expect in the Coming Days

Looking ahead to Wednesday, Chiloane mentioned that heavy rainfall is still expected to impact the eastern regions, particularly Mpumalanga and Limpopo.

These areas are likely to experience an 80% chance of rain, while northern Gauteng and parts of KwaZulu-Natal could see a 60% chance.

The rest of the country will have a much lower chance of rain, with some areas expecting only a 30% chance.
