The Oyo State Government is preparing to take a major step in its environmental agenda with the planned inauguration of a Climate Council next week.
The initiative is expected to reinforce the state’s climate governance framework and support ongoing efforts to address environmental challenges through more coordinated policies and long-term planning.
Officials say the move forms part of a broader strategy to enhance sustainability programs while accelerating the implementation and review of the state’s Climate Action Plan.
Makinde Administration Expands Climate Change Response
According to state authorities, Governor Seyi Makinde will formally inaugurate the council, which is expected to become the highest policy-making and advisory platform on climate-related matters in the state.
The announcement was conveyed through a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information, while the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, outlined the objectives of the new body.
Aderinto described the council’s establishment as a landmark development in the government’s pursuit of environmental sustainability and climate resilience.
Council to Guide Climate Policies and Adaptation Measures
The newly created body will be tasked with providing strategic leadership on climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.
It is expected to guide policies aimed at reducing environmental risks while helping communities adapt to the growing impacts of climate change.
State officials indicated that the council would also ensure that Oyo State’s climate initiatives remain aligned with Nigeria’s national climate targets and broader international environmental commitments.
Stakeholders to Participate in Climate Action Plan Review
Alongside the council’s inauguration, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources is set to begin a comprehensive review of the state’s Climate Action Plan.
The exercise will involve a wide range of stakeholders, including government ministries, agencies, civil society organizations, development partners, academic institutions, and climate specialists.
Authorities believe the collaborative approach will help produce a practical and effective roadmap for future climate interventions.
Focus Areas Include Flooding, Agriculture and Urban Resilience
The review process will examine climate vulnerabilities across all 33 local government areas of the state.
Particular attention will be given to forests, water resources, agricultural systems, and urban communities that face increasing environmental pressures.
Officials said the assessment would also address recurring challenges such as flooding, erosion, and heat stress, while identifying solutions capable of strengthening resilience across vulnerable sectors.
State Targets Low-Carbon Growth and Climate Financing
Another key component of the review will involve developing a more detailed greenhouse gas inventory and identifying pathways for low-carbon development.
The government also intends to explore new financing opportunities to support climate initiatives.
These include carbon credit programs, public-private partnerships, and support from international donors and development agencies.
Authorities believe these mechanisms could unlock resources needed to implement large-scale environmental and sustainability projects.
Revised Climate Plan Expected Before End of August
According to the Environment Commissioner, the technical review sessions will culminate in a revised Climate Action Plan that is expected to be completed before the end of August 2026.
Once validated, priority projects outlined in the updated strategy are expected to move directly into implementation, providing the state with a stronger institutional framework and a more science-based approach to environmental management.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to Green Development
The Oyo State Government says it remains committed to safeguarding natural resources, improving environmental sustainability, and building communities capable of withstanding climate-related challenges.
Officials maintain that the creation of the Climate Council and the revision of the Climate Action Plan are key steps toward positioning Oyo State as a leading sub-national authority in climate action, environmental stewardship, and green development in Nigeria.
