Fulham have stepped up discussions with former Liverpool defender Álvaro Arbeloa as they move closer to appointing a new manager, with the Spanish coach emerging as a leading candidate to take over at Craven Cottage.

Negotiations have already included detailed conversations around a potential three-year contract, along with early planning for the composition of his backroom staff.

The club are keen to ensure a smooth transition as they prepare for a new era in the Premier League.

Arbeloa in line for first major managerial role

At 43, Arbeloa is being viewed as a serious option to step into senior management in England for the first time.

While still relatively inexperienced at the top level, he is understood to be open to the challenge and eager to build his reputation outside Spain.

Fulham’s interest has placed him as the current frontrunner to replace Marco Silva, although sources indicate the club are still in contact with at least one other managerial candidate as part of their ongoing process.

Real Madrid background and coaching experience

Arbeloa’s coaching journey has been shaped heavily by his time at Real Madrid, where he was promoted internally to help stabilise a dressing room that had become fractured under previous leadership.

He later took interim charge of the first team at the end of last season before being succeeded by José Mourinho, gaining valuable experience managing elite-level players in a high-pressure environment.

Potential Premier League storyline involving Alonso

A possible subplot is already emerging ahead of the new Premier League campaign, with Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso—former teammates at both Liverpool and international level—potentially set to meet as managers.

If appointments align, the pair could face each other on the opening weekend on August 24, when Fulham are scheduled to take on Chelsea in a highly anticipated fixture.

Transfer planning already under discussion

Fulham are also accelerating their recruitment planning as they prepare for a busy summer window, and Arbeloa has reportedly already been consulted on a number of identified transfer targets.

The club are aiming to finalise a managerial appointment quickly to ensure incoming signings align with the new coach’s tactical vision and long-term strategy.

Other candidates considered by Fulham

While Arbeloa is strongly in contention, Fulham have also explored alternative options, including Ipswich Town boss Kieran McKenna.

However, any move for McKenna is complicated by compensation demands, believed to be in the region of £7.5 million, following his recent departure from Ipswich to take a break from management duties.
