FlySafair Assures Travelers of Continued Service in South Africa While Working to Resolve Foreign Ownership Issue with ASLC

FlySafair’s Commitment to Uninterrupted Service

FlySafair has reassured passengers that their operations will continue smoothly, despite facing a recent ruling by the Air Services Licensing Council (ASLC) regarding non-compliance.

The airline confirmed that there will be no disruption to its flight schedules.

What the ASLC Ruling Means

The ASLC has given FlySafair 12 months to align with the regulatory requirements, requesting monthly progress updates from the airline.

This issue stems from formal complaints filed by Airlink and LIFT Airline back in February 2022, claiming that FlySafair’s ownership structure violated South African laws.

Specifically, the law limits foreign ownership in domestic airlines to 25%, but FlySafair is largely controlled by ASL Aviation Holdings from Ireland.

ASL holds a 25% direct stake in the airline and an additional 49.86% through the Safair Investment Trust, making their total ownership 74.86%.

This far exceeds the legal limit for foreign ownership.

FlySafair Assures Passengers of Normal Flight Operations

FlySafair has made it clear that this issue is more about regulatory compliance on ownership structure rather than any operational concerns.

Therefore, passengers can continue to book and travel with FlySafair without any worries.

“We are happy to confirm that there is no immediate threat to our operations.

Our priority remains serving our customers,” said Kirby Gordon, FlySafair’s Chief Marketing Officer.

He also reassured travelers that FlySafair will work diligently over the next 12 months to ensure full compliance with the regulations.

Looking Ahead: Will FlySafair Meet the Deadline?

With 12 months to sort out the compliance matter, the key question is whether FlySafair will be able to meet the required regulations.

It remains to be seen how the airline will navigate these legal hurdles, but for now, flights will operate as usual.
