The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a heatwave advisory for parts of the Eastern Cape, warning residents to prepare for several consecutive days of unusually high temperatures.

The conditions are expected to affect areas within the Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality from Thursday, 29 October, until Saturday, 31 October.

Cradock and Middelburg Among Areas Covered

The advisory includes parts of Inxuba Yethemba Local Municipality, which covers Cradock and Middelburg.

SAWS expects temperatures in the affected areas to remain unusually high for three consecutive days. However, the advisory does not provide specific temperature forecasts or identify the locations expected to experience the highest readings.

Residents are encouraged to monitor the weather service’s latest forecasts for further information.

Prolonged Heat Can Increase Health Risks

A heatwave occurs when temperatures remain unusually high over several consecutive days, rather than during a single hot afternoon.

Extended periods of heat can make it difficult for people to cool down, particularly when indoor temperatures remain elevated or conditions stay hot overnight.

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke.

Residents Advised to Take Precautions

Residents are advised to drink water regularly and limit prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Outdoor activities should be avoided during the hottest parts of the day where possible.

People working outdoors should take regular breaks in shaded or cooler areas.

Older people, young children and individuals with existing health conditions may be particularly vulnerable to prolonged heat. Residents are also encouraged to check on vulnerable relatives and neighbours during the advisory period.

Heatwave Conditions Expected to Continue Until Saturday

SAWS expects the heatwave conditions to persist until Saturday, 31 October. The advisory does not specify how quickly temperatures are expected to fall after that date.

Residents should continue checking the latest SAWS forecasts and weather advisories for updates or changes to the expected conditions.
