Duduzile Zuma Laughs Off Incitement Charges and Vows Political Motivation After Court Appearance in Durban

Duduzile Zuma, the daughter of former South African president Jacob Zuma, has made headlines with her defiant response to charges following her recent court appearance.

The 42-year-old MK Party member is facing accusations of inciting violence over her controversial posts on X (formerly Twitter) related to the July unrest in 2021.

After her appearance at the Durban Magistrates Court, Duduzile shared a bold Instagram post, laughing off the charges and showing no signs of fear.

She was released on a “warning” and is set to return to court in March.

Charges and Court Appearance

On January 30, Duduzile attended the Durban Magistrates Court, accompanied by her brother Duduzane and their father, Jacob Zuma.

The case stems from her involvement in the 2021 unrest, during which widespread looting and violence took place across South Africa.

Duduzile’s social media posts have been cited as a catalyst for the unrest, leading to her facing serious charges.

Represented by lawyer Dali Mpofu, who recently switched from the EFF to the MK Party, Duduzile’s defense team requested her release on bail.

However, the case has been moved to the Durban High Court, and she was eventually granted a “warning” release.

Her next court date is set for March 20.

A Defiant Instagram Post

In her Instagram post following the court session, Duduzile appeared to brush off the charges.

She shared images of herself smiling and laughing in the dock, expressing confidence that there was no substance to the case against her.

“They do not have a case here, this is just POLITICAL,” she wrote, reinforcing her stance that the charges were politically motivated.

She also expressed gratitude toward the MK Party members who came out in support of her during the court proceedings.

As an added note, Duduzile invited her followers to join her at the upcoming Soweto Derby at the FNB Stadium on February 1, where she will make a guest appearance.

The Tweets that Sparked the Charges

The charges against Duduzile stem from her social media activity during the July 2021 unrest.

The period was marked by violent protests, looting, and widespread destruction, which left over 70 people dead.

Duduzile, in the wake of her father’s imprisonment for contempt of court, retweeted several videos of the chaos, which prosecutors argue may have encouraged further violence.

She has been charged under the Protection of Constitutional Democracy against Terrorist and Related Activities Act (POCDATARA), along with incitement to commit violence.

These serious charges could have major implications, but Duduzile has maintained that the case against her is politically motivated.
