Just days after undergoing emergency heart surgery, Harvey Weinstein, the former Hollywood mogul, has found himself facing additional sex crime charges.
At 72 years old, Weinstein’s legal troubles are mounting as he approaches a new trial in New York.
However, the latest indictment remains sealed for now and will be fully revealed when he appears in court on September 18.
Recovering from Heart Surgery
Weinstein is currently recovering in a Manhattan hospital after surgery to remove fluid from his heart and lungs.
He was notably absent from a recent hearing regarding these new charges due to his health condition.
While he’s in the hospital, details of the fresh allegations remain under wraps, adding further uncertainty to his already complicated legal situation.
New Allegations Resurface
Last week, prosecutors revealed that they have begun presenting evidence of additional sexual misconduct allegations against Weinstein, some dating back to the mid-2000s.
The latest indictment reportedly involves incidents at well-known locations like the Tribeca Grand Hotel, now called the Roxy Hotel, and a residential building in Lower Manhattan between late 2005 and mid-2006.
Another accusation involves a separate incident at a Tribeca hotel in May 2016.
Since the indictment is sealed, it’s unclear how many or which of these accusations are part of the new charges.
Legal Battles Continue
This new indictment comes after Weinstein’s 2020 rape and sexual assault conviction was overturned earlier this year, prompting a retrial.
Prosecutors have been working to retry him for those original charges, but it’s unclear if the new allegations will be included in the upcoming trial.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, British prosecutors recently dropped their indecent assault case against Weinstein.
Health and Legal Woes
Weinstein’s health has become a central issue in his legal proceedings.
During the recent hearing, which he missed due to his medical condition, the judge allowed him to remain in Bellevue Hospital instead of being transferred back to Rikers Island.
Once the powerful co-founder of Miramax, Weinstein continues to claim that all sexual encounters were consensual, despite being labeled one of the key figures in the #MeToo movement in 2017.
