Cristiano Ronaldo has left Portugal’s national team training camp after tensions with manager Jorge Jesus escalated on Wednesday.
The 41-year-old forward announced his departure in a statement posted on Instagram, saying his decision followed comments made by Jesus during a tense press conference.
Ronaldo said he had also spoken with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation before deciding to leave the squad.
Dispute Follows Decision to Bench Ronaldo
The departure comes after Ronaldo was left on the bench for Portugal’s entire 2-1 victory on Sunday.
Jesus subsequently insisted that there were no problems between himself and the veteran forward, although he acknowledged that Ronaldo was angry with him over the situation.
The manager also declined to confirm whether Ronaldo would return to the starting lineup for Portugal’s upcoming clash with Denmark on Thursday.
