The UK government has announced the appointment of Melanie “Mel” Barlow as the next British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam.
She is scheduled to officially assume the diplomatic post in September 2026, succeeding the current leadership at the British mission in the Southeast Asian nation.
The appointment places an experienced career diplomat at the forefront of the United Kingdom’s diplomatic engagement with Brunei, where she will be responsible for strengthening bilateral cooperation, supporting British interests, and expanding partnerships across political, economic, and regional issues.
Extensive Diplomatic Career Across Asia
Barlow brings more than two decades of experience in the UK diplomatic service, having served in several senior positions throughout Asia and within the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
Since 2023, she has served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to Laos in Vientiane.
Prior to that role, she was Deputy Ambassador and Consul General in Kathmandu, Nepal, between 2022 and 2023, where she contributed to diplomatic relations and consular operations.
Earlier assignments also included leadership roles in London, such as Deputy Head of the Consular Strategy and Network Department and Lead Trade Negotiator in the unit responsible for third-country agreements.
Expertise in Trade and Regional Affairs
Throughout her diplomatic career, Barlow has developed extensive expertise in trade policy, international negotiations, and regional diplomacy.
Between 2015 and 2018, she was posted to Seoul as Trade Policy and Economic Diplomacy Counsellor, focusing on commercial relations and economic cooperation.
She later worked on private-sector engagement within the Illegal Wildlife Trade Joint Unit, reflecting the UK’s broader environmental and conservation priorities.
Her portfolio has also included senior leadership of South Asia policy teams, overseeing UK relations with India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the Maldives.
Longstanding Experience in Japan and International Policy
A significant portion of Barlow’s diplomatic career has been connected to Japan.
Following Japanese language training in 2004 and 2005, she served in Tokyo as Second Secretary (Political) from 2006 to 2008 and later as Second Secretary (Trade) between 2009 and 2011.
Earlier in her Foreign Office career, she held positions including Project Manager in the Department for Strategy and Innovation, Desk Officer on the Iraq Political Team, and Special Projects Manager for Japan and China at Trade Partners UK.
Career Before Joining the Foreign Office
Barlow joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) in 2002, launching a diplomatic career that has spanned multiple continents and policy areas.
Before entering government service, she worked in the private sector beginning in 1996, providing her with experience that would later complement her work in international trade, diplomacy, and economic engagement.
Her appointment as British High Commissioner to Brunei reflects the UK’s continued emphasis on experienced diplomatic leadership in the Indo-Pacific region, drawing on her extensive background in Asian affairs, international trade, and foreign policy.
