Belgium will head into their FIFA World Cup quarter-final against Spain without defender Zeno Debast after a dispute over his fitness between the national team and his club, Sporting CP, prevented him from being cleared for selection.
The 22-year-old has not played a single minute at the tournament after suffering an injury toward the end of the Portuguese domestic season, despite making encouraging progress in his recovery over recent weeks.
Sporting Blocks Debast From Match Action
The disagreement centers on whether Debast is medically ready to return to competitive football.
While Belgium’s medical team believes the defender has recovered sufficiently, Sporting CP has informed both the player and the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) that it does not consider him fit to participate in matches.
As a result, Debast will not be available for Friday’s World Cup quarter-final against Spain in Los Angeles.
The RBFA confirmed the situation in an official statement, explaining that Sporting’s medical assessment conflicts with the conclusions reached by Belgium’s own doctors, as well as FIFA’s medical and insurance officials.
Belgium Questions Club’s Medical Assessment
According to the Belgian federation, Debast continues to train individually under the supervision of the national team’s performance staff while discussions over his condition continue.
The RBFA stated that Sporting’s decision differs from the evaluations carried out by its own medical department and FIFA authorities, leaving the defender unavailable despite ongoing rehabilitation.
The situation has created a rare club-versus-country disagreement at one of football’s biggest tournaments.
Ongoing Talks Between Sporting and Belgium
Reports indicate that Sporting CP and the Belgian federation have remained in regular communication throughout the World Cup regarding Debast’s rehabilitation and playing status.
Officials from both organizations were expected to meet in Los Angeles before Belgium’s quarter-final to review the defender’s condition, although the discussions have not resulted in a change to his availability.
Throughout the tournament, Debast has continued training separately from the main squad while remaining with the team and supporting his teammates from the sidelines.
Experienced Defender Misses Another Major Opportunity
Despite being only 22, Debast has already earned 26 international appearances for Belgium and was included in the country’s squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
His absence is another setback for a player regarded as one of Belgium’s important defensive options, particularly with the knockout rounds demanding greater squad depth.
Belgium Continue Strong World Cup Run
Even without Debast, Belgium have produced an impressive tournament campaign.
The Red Devils finished top of their group after collecting five points from three matches before staging a dramatic comeback victory against Senegal in the Round of 32.
They followed that performance with an emphatic 4-1 victory over the United States in the Round of 16 to secure their place in the last eight.
Those results have kept Belgium unbeaten heading into one of their toughest tests of the competition.
Garcia Welcomes Underdog Challenge Against Spain
Belgium head coach Rudi Garcia acknowledged the scale of the challenge awaiting his team against one of the tournament favourites but insisted his players are embracing the opportunity.
Garcia praised Spain’s long-established possession-based style, describing them as one of the strongest footballing nations in the competition.
At the same time, he expressed confidence in Belgium’s attacking quality, pointing out that his side ranks among the tournament’s highest-scoring teams.
The Belgian coach also dismissed any concerns about the atmosphere, recalling his team’s victory over the United States despite playing in front of a largely hostile crowd.
Garcia said Belgium would focus on executing their own game plan and promised his players would do everything possible to challenge Spain, even while accepting their status as underdogs heading into the quarter-final.
