France booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-finals after defeating Morocco 2-0 in Boston, with captain Kylian Mbappe overcoming an early setback to inspire another commanding knockout victory.
Mbappe Recovers From Penalty Miss to Inspire Victory
The French captain endured frustration in the opening half after seeing his penalty saved by Moroccan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou. However, Mbappe responded in trademark fashion after the interval, scoring the breakthrough goal before creating the second for Ousmane Dembele.
The result sends Didier Deschamps’ side into a third consecutive World Cup semi-final, extending a remarkable run that includes lifting the trophy in 2018 and finishing as runners-up at Qatar 2022.
France Dominate Early But Bounou Keeps Morocco Alive
France controlled much of the opening exchanges and nearly found an early breakthrough when Dayot Upamecano headed goalward from a fifth-minute corner, only for Bounou to make a comfortable save.
Les Bleus were later awarded a penalty after Noussair Mazraoui fouled Mbappe inside the area. Despite the opportunity, the Moroccan goalkeeper guessed correctly and denied the striker from the spot, ensuring the teams remained level at halftime.
Second-Half Quality Decides the Contest
France finally broke the deadlock on the hour mark through Mbappe, who curled an excellent finish beyond Bounou from outside the penalty area to score his eighth goal of the tournament.
Only six minutes later, the Real Madrid forward turned provider, threading a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Dembele, who calmly finished into the bottom corner to double France’s advantage and effectively seal the contest.
Deschamps’ men comfortably managed the remaining minutes to secure another appearance among the tournament’s final four.
Morocco Exit With Heads Held High
Although disappointed with the defeat, Morocco coach Mohamed Ouahbi praised his players for their commitment and insisted the team’s future remains promising despite missing out on the semi-finals.
He acknowledged that injuries and limited squad depth made the challenge even more difficult but stressed that Morocco’s performances continue to inspire supporters across Africa and beyond.
Ouahbi said the team remains determined to continue progressing and competing for major honours in future international tournaments.
France Focus Turns to Semi-Final Challenge
France manager Didier Deschamps described the match as a demanding encounter, noting that Morocco made life difficult during the first half before his side gained greater control after the break.
He praised Mbappe’s decisive contribution and said France had successfully cleared another major obstacle on their path toward another World Cup final.
Mbappe, who received the Superior Player of the Match award, admitted he suffered an ankle knock late in the game but confirmed he was fit. He emphasized that France remain fully focused on the challenges ahead and are determined to continue their pursuit of another world title.
Mbappe and Dembele Continue Record-Breaking Tournament
Mbappe now leads the race for the tournament’s Golden Boot after scoring in five of France’s six World Cup matches. His latest strike also took his overall World Cup tally to 20 goals, second only to Lionel Messi’s 21.
Dembele’s goal marked his fifth of the competition, making him just the third French player to score five times in a single World Cup edition, joining Mbappe and legendary striker Just Fontaine.
Morocco also celebrated a notable milestone despite elimination, with 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi becoming the first African teenager to make five World Cup appearances.
