Ban Ki-moon Centre Launches Global Citizen Scholarship Program to Empower Young African Leaders for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in 2025

The Global Citizen Scholarship Program is a unique opportunity designed to support passionate young leaders dedicated to advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This program aims to empower individuals who are already engaged in global change-making efforts but might not otherwise have access to the essential educational resources, networking opportunities, and peer collaboration needed to take their work to the next level.

What the Scholarship Offers

Selected scholars will be able to participate in specialized academic training, attend international forums, and network with influential changemakers.

Additionally, the scholarship offers expert-led skills workshops, peer-to-peer exchange, and a mentoring component that connects participants with past scholarship recipients.

This provides an invaluable opportunity to learn from others while contributing to a global community of changemakers.

Call for Young African Leaders

In 2025, the Ban Ki-moon Centre will be selecting 14 young African leaders who are committed to advancing the SDGs.

Alongside three students from Management Center Innsbruck, these 17 individuals will form this year’s cohort of scholars.

The program will focus on individuals who demonstrate a strong dedication to the goals of global citizenship and have a track record of working toward positive change in their communities.

SDG Micro-Project Component

A key aspect of the program is the requirement for scholars to propose and implement their own SDG Micro-Project during the scholarship period, which runs from April to December 2025.

These projects will be local initiatives designed to address one or more of the SDGs, and they will focus on community-driven impact.

Scholars will have the opportunity to make a real difference in their local areas while developing important leadership and project management skills.

Application Criteria

If you’re an African youth aged between 20 and 35 with a deep commitment to the SDGs and global citizenship, this program might be for you.

Applicants need to meet the following criteria:

  • Must be an African citizen (regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation)
  • Aged 20-35
  • Demonstrated commitment to the SDGs
  • A proven proficiency in English (at least a B2 level)
  • Must have completed at least a Master’s degree, though in exceptional cases, completion of the first year of studies will also be considered.

Benefits of the Scholarship

Scholars will attend the MCI Summer School on “Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development” and participate in additional skills training with other leading organizations and experts.

They will also benefit from peer-to-peer mentoring, connecting with past scholarship alumni, and taking part in the RELX Inspiration Day 2025.

To further support their efforts, each scholar will receive a USD 500 seed grant for their SDG Micro-Project, as well as ongoing project management support to ensure successful implementation.
