Argentina selects Cristian Romero for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay and Brazil while Tottenham monitors his slow recovery from injury

Cristian Romero’s name appearing in Argentina’s preliminary squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers has certainly caught some attention—especially considering he hasn’t played a competitive match in 2024.

The Tottenham defender has been dealing with a groin injury since December, yet his national team inclusion suggests optimism about his recovery.

A Long Road to Recovery

Romero’s injury troubles began when he was forced off during Spurs’ dramatic 4-3 defeat against Chelsea on December 8.

Since then, his return has been slow and steady.

He was seen back in training at the end of January, but Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has been cautious with his comeback, referring to his recovery process as a “slow-burner.”

Will He Be Ready for Argentina?

Despite his ongoing rehabilitation, Argentina has named Romero in their squad for crucial matches against Uruguay on March 21 and Brazil on March 26.

With no game time under his belt this year, the decision raises questions about his match fitness and readiness for international duty.

Tottenham’s Timetable for Romero’s Return

Postecoglou recently provided an update on Romero’s availability, suggesting the defender could be in contention for Spurs’ Premier League clash against Bournemouth on Sunday or their Europa League second-leg tie against AZ Alkmaar on March 13.

However, he is expected to miss the first leg of that European tie this Thursday.

Tottenham’s boss also hinted that both Romero and his injured teammates, Micky van de Ven and Dominic Solanke, are on track for a return before the international break.

“We’ve got two European games and three league games before then, and I really want them up and running by that time,” he stated.

What’s Next?

With Romero edging closer to full fitness, the big question is whether he will get game time with Spurs before heading off with Argentina.

Tottenham will be keen to reintegrate him carefully, while Argentina will hope he’s ready for the high-stakes qualifiers.

His selection may be a gamble, but it’s one that both club and country will monitor closely.
