Amber Davies has spoken out after taking action against a member of the audience who was allegedly recording her performance during a recent production of Legally Blonde, saying the incident disrupted both the cast and the atmosphere on stage.
The former Love Island winner, who now stars as Elle Woods in the touring musical, shared her frustration after Saturday night’s performance in Dublin, using social media to remind theatre audiences why filming is not allowed.
Actress Says Recording Distracted the Entire Cast
According to Amber, the issue unfolded during the first act of the show at Dublin’s Bord Gáis Theatre, where she noticed a woman seated in the front row repeatedly using her phone to record the performance.
The actress explained that the behavior became impossible for the performers to ignore and affected the concentration of everyone on stage.
She described the audience as otherwise wonderful but said a single person’s actions had overshadowed what should have been another enjoyable evening on tour.
Amber Asked Staff to Remove the Audience Member
Speaking to fans during the interval through Instagram Stories, Amber revealed that she had alerted theatre staff and requested that the woman not be allowed to return for the second half of the production.
She said the recording had damaged the morale of the cast during what was already their eighth performance of the week and expressed hope that Act Two could continue without further distractions.
Amber also warned that she has become increasingly vigilant during performances and can quickly identify where anyone filming is sitting before notifying venue staff.
Theatre Rules Exist for More Than One Reason
Amber used the incident to remind fans that recording performances is prohibited in theatres for several important reasons.
Most productions ban video recording, photography with flash and audio capture to protect copyrighted material, comply with performers’ union regulations and preserve the unique experience of live theatre for everyone in attendance.
She encouraged audiences to put their phones away and simply enjoy the performance rather than feeling the need to document every moment.
Similar Problems Have Emerged Across London’s Theatre Scene
Amber’s experience comes amid growing complaints from performers about audience etiquette in theatres.
Many actors have recently spoken about the increasing number of distractions caused by mobile phones, with some choosing to confront disruptive behavior publicly instead of ignoring it.
The issue has become a frequent topic of discussion as live productions continue attracting large audiences.
Rosamund Pike Recently Called Out a Texter During Curtain Call
Only weeks earlier, actress Rosamund Pike also addressed an audience member directly after a performance of Inter Alia at London’s Wyndham’s Theatre.
Rather than simply accepting the applause after the curtain fell, Pike paused to speak about someone she had seen texting during one of the play’s most emotional moments.
Without identifying the individual, she explained that performers notice these distractions and that they affect the connection between actors and the audience.
Actress Says Phones Break the Connection Between Stage and Audience
Rosamund acknowledged that there could be exceptional circumstances, joking that perhaps the audience member was a doctor responding to an emergency.
However, she stressed that actors remain highly aware of what is happening in the auditorium throughout a performance.
She explained that theatre relies on a shared emotional experience, adding that seeing someone focused on a phone instead of the story can weaken that bond between performers and viewers.
Theatre Fans Rally Behind the Performers
Many audience members later praised Rosamund’s comments on social media, saying they appreciated her willingness to address the issue openly.
Several described her speech as a reminder that live performances deserve full attention and argued that audience members should be willing to put away their phones for the duration of a show.
Rosamund’s remarks were met with applause inside the theatre, reflecting growing support for stricter audience etiquette as performers continue urging the public to respect the live theatre experience.
