Aimee Mountjoy, a 21-year-old nursery teacher and young mother, recently shared a deeply personal experience on TikTok that resonated with many.
After giving birth to her son in an awkward position on the toilet back in September 2019, Aimee was left with significant damage to her right labia.
The traumatic birth left her with an “adult fist-sized hole,” a condition that impacted her life and confidence for years.
Aimee felt self-conscious about her appearance, to the extent that she didn’t allow her boyfriend, Owen Mitchell, to see her intimate areas throughout their two-year relationship.
After being “parred off” by doctors for four years, Aimee finally received labiaplasty on the NHS, a procedure she hopes will help her regain confidence.
The surgery, which she likened to getting a “designer vagina,” reduced the size of her labia minora, the skin flaps on either side of the vaginal opening.
Aimee’s journey to surgery wasn’t straightforward; it took three referrals and a lot of persistence.
She shared that her initial referral was lost during the COVID-19 pandemic, making the process even more challenging.
Post-Surgery Reflections
While the surgery was a significant step towards healing, Aimee is still grappling with mixed feelings.
The doctors only operated on her right side, leaving the left side untouched, which she feels has left her looking “botched.
” Despite this, Aimee finds comfort in the support of her boyfriend Owen, who has been understanding and caring throughout the ordeal.
She mentioned that before the surgery, she couldn’t even wear jeans due to the pain, opting instead for seamless leggings and oversized clothes. This condition also impacted her job as a gymnastics coach, as she struggled with physical activities.
Raising Awareness
Aimee hopes that sharing her story will help raise awareness about labiaplasty and the challenges women face when seeking gynecological care.
She was surprised to learn that such surgeries were available on the NHS, and she wants other women to know that help is available, even if it requires persistence.
Aimee’s experience highlights the importance of advocating for oneself in medical situations and the emotional toll that physical health issues can take.
Looking Forward
Though Aimee still feels uneasy about her appearance post-surgery, she’s hopeful for the future.
She plans to have a home birth if she has another child and continues to share her journey on TikTok, where she has received support from other women who have faced similar issues.
For now, Aimee is focused on her recovery and adjusting to her new reality, one step at a time.
