In an unexpected twist, Julen Lopetegui is holding out hope that Niclas Fullkrug might be available for West Ham’s trip to Fulham, despite German national team coach Julian Nagelsmann’s earlier indication that the striker would miss the game due to injury.
Injury Setback for Fullkrug
Fullkrug was sidelined for Germany’s recent 2-2 draw against the Netherlands after picking up a calf and Achilles tendon issue.
Although Nagelsmann assured that the injury isn’t severe, he confirmed that Fullkrug would need to rest and would be unavailable for the upcoming Premier League fixture.
Lopetegui’s Optimism
However, Lopetegui hasn’t completely ruled out the possibility of Fullkrug featuring in Saturday’s match at Craven Cottage.
The West Ham manager plans to assess Fullkrug’s condition more closely on Friday.
“We’re keeping our fingers crossed,” Lopetegui commented on Thursday.
“Fulla seemed a bit better on Wednesday.
We’ll evaluate his situation thoroughly and make a final call based on how he feels.”
Alternative Options
Fullkrug’s absence is noteworthy as he has yet to start a Premier League game following his £23 million transfer from Borussia Dortmund.
Instead, Lopetegui has favored Michail Antonio, who has just returned to training after international duties with Jamaica.
If Fullkrug remains unavailable, Lopetegui might consider using Jarrod Bowen as a central forward.
Bowen, who has experience playing this role for England and West Ham, could be a viable option.
“We might use Jarrod in the center,” Lopetegui said.
“The real challenge is not just about filling a position but assembling the right team to tackle our upcoming match.”
Looking Ahead
With the game against Fulham fast approaching, all eyes will be on Fullkrug’s fitness updates as West Ham prepares for the challenge ahead.
