Houston-based hard-tech opportunity builder Flathead Forge has strengthened its leadership team with the appointment of Chad Bown as Partner and Managing Director, bringing extensive experience in venture investing, emerging technologies and industrial innovation to the firm.

Bown Brings More Than a Decade of bp Experience

Bown joins Flathead Forge after spending more than 10 years at bp, where he most recently served as Managing Director of bp Ventures, the energy company’s corporate venture capital arm.

During his tenure, bp Ventures invested more than $1 billion in emerging technology companies globally.

Bown was responsible for venture investment and portfolio activities across the Americas, while also overseeing strategic transactions involving companies within the portfolio.

His work included leading sell-side transactions that generated more than $600 million through 25 liquidity events.

Bown also held board director positions at several portfolio companies, including Eavor Technology, Xpansiv, Beyond Limits and Saltworks Technologies.

New Role Will Cover Investments and Capital Formation

At Flathead Forge, Bown will work alongside partners Douglas Lee, David Lee and Noel Knape.

His responsibilities will span the firm’s investment activities as well as efforts to create value across its portfolio.

The new managing director will also contribute to capital formation and the development of institutional partnerships, adding an experienced corporate venture perspective as Flathead Forge expands its investment platform.

Firm Targets Hard-Tech Opportunities Across Key Industries

Flathead Forge focuses on hard-tech opportunities connected to some of the infrastructure and resource challenges created by growing demand for energy, computing and critical materials.

Its investment interests include artificial intelligence and data centers, rising power demand, advanced manufacturing and critical minerals.

Rather than simply investing in existing companies, the firm also works with founders to form businesses around emerging technologies.

Four Verticals Define Flathead Forge Strategy

The firm currently concentrates its company-building and investment activities across four core areas: water purification and valorization, critical mineral processing, advanced gas systems and hard-tech enablement platforms.

That strategy positions Flathead Forge around technologies aimed at addressing resource efficiency, industrial capacity and the infrastructure requirements of an increasingly technology-driven economy.

First Fund Targeted at $200 Million

Flathead Forge is targeting $200 million for its inaugural fund as it builds out its investment platform.

The fund is expected to close in 2026, providing the firm with additional capital to pursue opportunities across its targeted hard-tech sectors.

Bown’s appointment comes as the firm works to establish its presence in a market where venture capital is increasingly intersecting with industrial technology, energy infrastructure, water systems and critical mineral supply chains.
