A chilling audio transmission has surfaced, revealing the final moments of a pilot’s communication as his aircraft spiraled out of control and crashed into a building near Honolulu’s airport.
The crash, which occurred Tuesday afternoon near Daniel K. Inouye International Airport, tragically claimed the lives of two people on board.
The Crash and the Pilot’s Final Transmission
Around 3 p.m., Kamaka Flight 689 was spotted by witnesses flying at an unusually low altitude.
Many feared the worst as the plane appeared to be heading toward the ground.
In a harrowing moment, the pilot’s final words were captured on audio, stating: “We’re out of control here.”
Air traffic controllers urgently advised the pilot to land the plane safely, suggesting any available runway or even any open area.
However, despite their efforts, the aircraft crashed into the side of an airport-owned building.
Witnesses Describe the Scene
Witnesses who saw the plane before the crash described it as unnervingly close to the ground.
One worker nearby, Sergiy Shpanka, recalled hearing a loud noise and watching the plane make a sharp left turn before disappearing from view.
“It was crazy because it was so low,” he said.
He added that the situation could have been far worse, acknowledging that the pilot made efforts to minimize the damage.
Another witness, Nancy Timco, described watching the plane from her office on the seventh floor of a nearby building.
“I saw a small plane fly past, and I thought, ‘Oh, he’s really, really low.'”
She then heard a loud bang moments later.
Building Set to Be Demolished
Smoke could be seen billowing from the wreckage as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
Honolulu Fire Department Chief Sheldon Hao noted that the building was fortunately abandoned at the time of the crash.
Remarkably, the structure had been slated for demolition and was set to be replaced with a parking garage for the airport.
The Impact of the Tragedy
Hawaii’s Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen expressed relief that no one else was involved in the crash, calling it a “best-case scenario.”
The two people on board, whose identities have not yet been released, were the only fatalities.
The airline confirmed that family members were contacted about the crash, and responders were aware of the airline’s involvement.
Kamaka Air, the airline operating the plane, specializes in inter-island services, including air cargo and charter flights.
In a statement, Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi expressed his sadness over the incident, offering condolences to the families of the victims.
“This heartbreaking incident reminds us of the dedication and risks taken by those who help keep Hawai’i’s essential goods moving,” he said.
Community Support and First Responder Praise
Blangiardi also thanked the first responders who acted quickly to manage the scene, adding that the city stands ready to support Kamaka Air and those affected.
Honolulu Emergency Services Director Dr. Jim Ireland described the crash as a “tragedy,” and his thoughts were with the families involved.
The community continues to mourn the loss of two individuals who lost their lives in this tragic accident, while authorities continue their investigation into the cause of the crash.
