The world is now reflecting on the death of one of China’s most prominent military figures, General Xu Qiliang.

Xu Qiliang, who once served as Vice Chairman of China’s Central Military Commission (CMC), died in Beijing on June 2nd, according to official statements cited by Xinhua news agency.

The exact cause of death was described as illness, with reports indicating he passed at 12:12 p.m. local time.

Born in March 1950 in Shandong Province’s Linqu County, Xu entered the military back in 1966 and joined the Communist Party a year later.

His career path took him through various aviation schools, where he trained to become a military pilot.

Over the years, he climbed the ranks—commanding divisions and air force armies before earning the prestigious rank of Air Force General in 2007.

Key Leadership Roles in China’s Military

From 2007 to 2012, Xu held the important roles of Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and Commander of the PLA Air Force.

His influence grew further when he became Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, serving from 2012 to 2022.

He was also a member of the 18th and 19th Politburo of the Communist Party, highlighting his political significance.

Interestingly, Xu was the first Vice Chairman of the CMC who didn’t come from the ground forces.
