The Girl From Plainville is based on a true story of Michelle Carter, who was at the center of an unprecedented “texting suicide case” that erupted after her lover, Conrad Roy, died in 2014.
The widely publicised case saw Michelle charged with involuntary manslaughter for encouraging him to commit suicide, mostly through phone calls and text messages.
Michelle and Conrad had only met in person a handful of times, but they had an incredible bond. Their relationship was built mainly through text messages.
The HBO documentary titled I Love You, Now Die: The Commonwealth vs Michelle Carter focuses on their story and is available to stream on Showmax.
The series was created by Critics Choice nominee Liz Hannah and Patrick Macmanus and has scored a 94% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Girl From Plainville stars Elle Fanning as Michelle, Colton Ryan as Conrad and Chloë Sevigny as Conrad’s mother, Lynn Roy.
For Elle Fanning, the role of Michelle Carter with plenty of responsibility. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, she said she had to “really think about the story”.
“It ultimately ends in such a tragedy and these [families] are still alive. We have to be sensitive to them. So it had to be told in the right way that could actually be helpful and possible help someone out there who’s suffering.”
