Former Orlando Pirates and Golden Arrows defender Thabo Matlaba has resurfaced in South African football after being spotted playing for Soweto Super United M17 in the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League.
The experienced left-back, widely known as ‘Festival’, has been without a club since his contract with Golden Arrows expired on 30 June 2026.
At 38, Matlaba now appears to be embarking on another chapter of his career in the provincial ranks, where his experience could prove valuable to a club with ambitions of reaching the professional divisions.
Former Bafana Bafana Defender Starts Against Tembisa Hollywood Thunder
Matlaba was included in Soweto Super United’s starting line-up for their ABC Motsepe League Stream A fixture against Tembisa Hollywood Thunder on Friday afternoon.
The match, played at Mehlareng Stadium in Tembisa, ended in a goalless draw, with the former Bafana Bafana international featuring for his new side.
His appearance marks a notable development following several months without a club after his departure from Golden Arrows.
Although details of his arrangement with Soweto Super United have not been provided, his presence on the pitch offers the club an opportunity to benefit from his experience at the highest level of South African football.
Golden Arrows Exit Followed Limited Playing Time
Matlaba joined Golden Arrows in April 2025 after leaving Royal AM, whose expulsion from the Premier Soccer League brought an end to the club’s participation in the competition.
However, his time with the Durban-based side did not provide the regular playing opportunities he might have hoped for.
During the previous campaign, he made just six appearances across all competitions for Abafana Bes’thende before his contract expired at the end of June 2026.
His move to Soweto Super United could offer him a fresh opportunity to secure regular football while bringing his experience to a team competing for provincial honours.
Matlaba Brings More Than 315 Top-Flight Appearances
Despite his recent difficulties securing game time, Matlaba has built an extensive career in South African football.
The defender has made more than 315 appearances in the country’s top flight, scoring 17 goals and providing 25 assists.
His career has included spells at several clubs, among them Orlando Pirates, Golden Arrows, Royal AM, Free State Stars, Black Leopards, Moroka Swallows and M Tigers FC.
His experience with Orlando Pirates and the national team also gives him a background in high-pressure matches and demanding competitive environments.
Soweto Super United’s technical team will hope those qualities can strengthen the defensive unit, particularly as the club looks to improve its position in the league.
Soweto Super United Target Promotion to the Professional Ranks
Soweto Super United have set their sights on winning the Gauteng provincial ABC Motsepe League title and securing a place in the national playoffs.
The club ultimately wants to earn promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship, South Africa’s second tier of professional football, next season.
Matlaba’s arrival could provide a boost to those ambitions, with his tactical awareness and familiarity with top-level competition potentially helping younger players in the squad.
However, the team will need consistent results if it is to challenge for the provincial title and advance to the promotion playoffs.
Club Sits Sixth After Two League Matches
Soweto Super United have collected two points from their opening two matches and currently occupy sixth position in the Stream A standings.
The goalless draw against Tembisa Hollywood Thunder added another point to their tally, but the team will be looking to turn draws into victories as the campaign progresses.
Their next league assignment is against RRR Rams FC at Phillip Stadium on Saturday, 17 October 2026. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:00.
The fixture will provide another opportunity for the team to pursue its promotion ambitions, with Matlaba potentially playing an important role as the season develops.
A New Challenge for the Experienced Left-Back
Matlaba’s appearance for Soweto Super United represents a new chapter for a defender whose career has included domestic league football and international experience with Bafana Bafana.
After limited opportunities at Golden Arrows and several months without a club, the move offers him a chance to return to competitive action while helping a lower-tier side pursue a place in the professional ranks.
Whether his experience can help Soweto Super United mount a sustained promotion challenge remains to be seen, but his presence gives the club an experienced option as it seeks to improve its early-season position.
