Sekhukhune United have strengthened their squad ahead of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign by signing Siphesihle Nkosi from Via Sports, an amateur club owned by former Orlando Pirates midfielder Mpho Makola.

The defender joins Babina Noko on a free transfer after attracting attention for his performances in South African lower-league football. His arrival gives Sekhukhune additional defensive depth as they prepare for the new season.

Nkosi Earns Professional Move After Strong Lower-League Displays

Nkosi impressed Sekhukhune’s scouting team through his consistent performances in the amateur ranks. The versatile player can operate as a centre-back or central midfielder, offering his new club options in more than one position.

His development at Via Sports also earned him recognition at national level, with the player receiving a place in the preliminary squad for South Africa’s Under-23 team.

The move to Sekhukhune represents another step in his progression from amateur football to the professional game.

Mpho Makola’s Club Bids Farewell to Founding Member

Via Sports confirmed Nkosi’s departure on social media on Thursday night, paying tribute to a player who had been part of the club since its early days.

The club described Nkosi, known by the nickname “Nkuzi”, as a founding member who contributed to its growth over three seasons.

In its farewell message, Via Sports praised his commitment, professionalism and character, adding that it was proud to have witnessed his development.

The club also expressed confidence that he would continue progressing at Sekhukhune and said he would always be welcome back.

Via Sports Built Momentum Under Former Pirates Star

Makola’s Via Sports have steadily established themselves in Gauteng’s amateur football scene, earning attention for their possession-based approach and attacking style.

Last season, Nkosi helped the team win the SAFA Hollywoodbets Regional League title, which sits in South African football’s fourth tier.

Although Via Sports subsequently fell short in their attempt to secure promotion through the playoffs, the club moved into the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League by purchasing the status of JMB FC.

The transition marked another stage in the club’s development as it seeks to compete at a higher level of amateur football.

Nkosi Follows Siphesihle Mazibuko Into Professional Football

Nkosi’s departure comes after Via Sports previously lost playmaker Siphesihle “Messi” Mazibuko to Gomora United, who compete in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

Both moves underline how players from Makola’s project are attracting opportunities beyond the amateur leagues.

For Nkosi, however, the switch to Sekhukhune takes him directly into the Betway Premiership environment, where he will have the opportunity to continue developing and compete for a place in the first team.

Sekhukhune Add Versatility to Their Defensive Options

Nkosi’s ability to play in central defence and midfield could prove useful to Sekhukhune as they prepare for the demands of the 2026/27 campaign.

His signing also highlights the opportunities available to emerging players in South Africa’s lower divisions when consistent performances attract the attention of top-flight clubs.

While his role at Sekhukhune remains to be seen, the move gives the young defender a significant opportunity to establish himself in professional football.
