Lewis Hamilton delivered a landmark victory for Ferrari at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, claiming his first win for the Italian team after a dramatic race that was ultimately shaped by a late virtual safety car and a heartbreaking retirement for championship leader Kimi Antonelli.

The seven-time world champion crossed the finish line ahead of Mercedes driver George Russell, while McLaren’s Lando Norris secured third place.

The result marked Formula One’s first all-British podium since the 1968 United States Grand Prix and ended Hamilton’s win drought stretching back to the 2024 Belgian Grand Prix, when he was still racing for Mercedes.

Ferrari and Hamilton Finally Return to the Front

Hamilton’s success provided the clearest sign yet that Ferrari has re-established itself as a genuine force at the front of the grid.

The victory also revived the Briton’s title ambitions, reducing the gap to championship leader Antonelli to 41 points.

After taking the chequered flag, an emotional Hamilton thanked Ferrari over team radio, expressing his pride in the team and gratitude to his family and supporters.

Later, he described the triumph as one of the most meaningful moments of his career, saying that winning in Ferrari red had been a dream he had carried since childhood.

The veteran praised the team’s flawless strategy, efficient pit stops and strong car performance, expressing hope that the success would be the first of many with the Scuderia.

Mercedes Controlled the Early Stages

For much of the afternoon, Mercedes appeared destined to leave Spain with victory.

Pole-sitter George Russell made a clean start and led from Hamilton and Antonelli through the opening phase of the race.

While Russell and Antonelli began on medium tyres, Hamilton started on softs and committed early to a three-stop strategy, making his first pit stop on lap 11.

Mercedes responded by bringing both of its drivers in shortly afterward to protect track position, even though it became increasingly apparent that Hamilton was running a different race plan.

As the race developed, Antonelli began applying pressure to Russell. The young Italian repeatedly challenged his teammate for the lead, particularly into Turn One, but Mercedes urged both drivers to avoid losing excessive time in their fight as Hamilton remained a looming threat.

Alonso Retirement Changes Everything

The race’s decisive moment arrived on lap 40.

With Hamilton still needing one final stop, Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin suffered a mechanical failure and stopped on track at Turn Nine.

Race officials deployed a virtual safety car to allow the recovery of the stranded vehicle.

The timing could not have been more favorable for Hamilton.

Because pit stops cost significantly less time under virtual safety car conditions, Hamilton was able to make his final stop while maintaining enough advantage to emerge still in the lead.

What had looked set to become a tense late-race battle suddenly swung heavily in Ferrari’s favor.

Armed with fresher tyres and clear air, Hamilton quickly established control and pulled away from the chasing Mercedes drivers.

The victory also carried a layer of irony. Ferrari’s previous win in Spain came in 2013 through Alonso himself, and it was the Spaniard’s retirement that inadvertently helped deliver Hamilton’s breakthrough Ferrari triumph more than a decade later.

Antonelli’s Misfortune Alters the Championship Picture

While Hamilton celebrated, Antonelli endured one of the most painful moments of his season.

The 19-year-old finally overtook Russell with five laps remaining after a race-long duel between the Mercedes teammates. His move into second place appeared to secure another major result in what has been a remarkable campaign.

However, just one lap later, his race came to an abrupt end when an electrical problem shut down his car between Turns Five and Six.

The retirement handed second place back to Russell and elevated Norris onto the podium.

For Antonelli, it was his first significant setback of the season and a costly blow in the championship battle.

Mixed Emotions at Ferrari and Mercedes

The result generated contrasting emotions across both leading teams.

Russell salvaged a valuable second-place finish after appearing likely to lose out to Antonelli before the younger driver’s retirement.

The podium represented an important recovery following several challenging weekends.

Mercedes, however, was left wondering what might have been. Without the virtual safety car intervention, Russell looked well placed to fight for victory.

Ferrari experienced both celebration and frustration. While Hamilton secured a historic win, teammate Charles Leclerc failed to finish after suffering a power-steering failure while running sixth.

Verstappen and McLaren Unable to Challenge

Behind the leading trio, Max Verstappen finished fourth for Red Bull, unable to mount a serious challenge for the podium positions.

McLaren’s Oscar Piastri crossed the line fifth, ahead of Red Bull driver Isack Hadjar in sixth.

Alpine enjoyed a strong double-points finish through Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, while Racing Bulls duo Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad completed the top ten.
