Recent reports suggest a troubling trend among footballers in Spain: the use of sexual consent contracts.
This shift comes in response to an increase in rape and assault allegations and convictions within the sport.
Consent Forms Becoming Common Practice
Miguel Angel Galan, the head of the Spanish School for the Education of Managers, has revealed that these consent forms are now a common practice among some players.
He recently shared a copy of one such form on his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Details of the Consent Form
The form, which is written in English, was obtained from a foreign player, according to Galan.
It spans three pages and includes several sections.
Both parties must identify themselves by name and confirm mutual sexual attraction.
They must also agree to be at each other’s disposal for a specified period and detail the activities involved.
Additionally, the form requires information on contraceptive methods and includes a subsection on “accidental violation.”
Criticism and Concerns
On the Spanish TV program ‘En boca de todos,’ Galan expressed his skepticism about the validity of such contracts, suggesting that they may be used differently in other countries.
He revealed that he knows of at least two players in LaLiga and one in the third division using these forms, though he questions their effectiveness compared to other consent methods.
Recent High-Profile Cases
This news comes shortly after Valencia forward Rafa Mir was detained for two nights on accusations of sexual assault, which he denies.
Mir has since been released on bail with conditions, including surrendering his passport and a restraining order.
Former Barcelona full-back Dani Alves has also been in the spotlight, having been found guilty of rape.
He faces a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence unless his appeal succeeds.
Alves was released on bail in March after paying a significant bond.
Premier League’s Response
In contrast, the Premier League has implemented mandatory sexual consent training for players and staff.
This training focuses on healthy, respectful relationships and harassment awareness.
Tortoise Media has reported an increase in compliance among top-flight clubs this year, with 14 out of 20 clubs confirming that training has been completed, up from 10 last year.
Looking Ahead
The ongoing developments in football highlight the need for effective measures and training to address issues of sexual consent and misconduct in the sport.
