Authorities are investigating a security breach at NBC’s Today studios after an unauthorized individual allegedly entered a restricted area at 30 Rockefeller Center in New York City and confronted anchor Craig Melvin.

The incident unfolded on Thursday morning while the morning program was off the air, prompting an immediate response from studio security and law enforcement.

According to police, the suspect gained access to a secured vestibule near Studio 1A before approaching Melvin.

The veteran broadcaster reportedly alerted security personnel, who quickly intervened and detained the individual until officers arrived.

Police Say Suspect Used Racist Language

Investigators said the confrontation involved the suspect allegedly directing a racist slur at Melvin.

Reports indicate the individual initially asked to see longtime Today personality Al Roker but shifted attention toward Melvin after learning Roker was not accessible.

The New York City Police Department confirmed officers responded to reports of a disorderly individual inside 30 Rockefeller Center shortly after 9 a.m.

The suspect was taken into custody, and officials emphasized that the encounter ended without any physical violence or injuries.

NBC Confirms Incident and Launches Security Review

NBC acknowledged the breach in a public statement, confirming that an unauthorized person entered a restricted section near Studio 1A before being stopped by security personnel.

The network stressed that no employees or guests were harmed during the incident and said it is fully cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues.

NBC also announced that it has begun reviewing its security measures to determine how the individual was able to access a restricted area inside the facility.

The broadcaster reiterated that the safety of its employees, on-air talent, production staff and studio visitors remains a top priority.

Staff Seek Answers Over Security Lapse

The incident has reportedly raised concerns among employees working on the Today program.

Sources familiar with the matter said staff members are questioning how the suspect managed to get close enough to approach one of the show’s anchors.

While law enforcement has confirmed the individual somehow reached a backstage area, investigators have not publicly disclosed the exact route used to bypass security.

Officials continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the breach.

Craig Melvin Continues Broadcast After Incident

Despite the unsettling encounter, Melvin later returned to the live broadcast alongside his co-hosts without publicly addressing what had occurred earlier that morning.

The 47-year-old journalist became a permanent co-anchor of Today after succeeding Hoda Kotb, a move that significantly increased his prominence on the nationally televised morning program.

Al Roker, whom the suspect reportedly asked for before approaching Melvin, has remained one of NBC’s most recognizable television personalities since becoming a regular fixture on the show in 1996.

Savannah Guthrie Steps Away for Separate Television Project

In an unrelated development, Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie announced that she will be absent from the program for several weeks while leading a television adaptation of the popular New York Times word game Wordle.

Her temporary departure follows another extended absence earlier this year after her mother, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona.

Guthrie returned to the program in April, but her mother remains missing, and authorities have not identified any suspects in that investigation.

Investigation Continues

Police have not released additional details about the suspect or potential charges as the investigation remains active.

NBC and the New York City Police Department are continuing to examine the incident, while the network evaluates whether further security enhancements are needed to prevent similar breaches in the future.
