Republican Michael Alfonso, the 26-year-old son-in-law of US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, has won Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District race, positioning himself to become the youngest member of Congress.
Alfonso defeated Democrat Clark, securing approximately 56 per cent of the vote against his opponent’s 44 per cent.
The Associated Press declared him the winner at around 10pm, with unofficial results showing him leading 56.1 per cent to 43.9 per cent after 79 per cent of ballots had been counted.
He will take over the congressional seat previously held by Republican Tom Tiffany, who vacated the position to contest the Wisconsin gubernatorial election but was unsuccessful.
Youngest Congressman to Replace Maxwell Frost
Alfonso’s election victory will make him the youngest serving member of Congress, surpassing Democrat Maxwell Frost, who was elected at 25 in 2022 and is now 29.
He will also be younger than Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was when she entered Congress at 29 after winning her first election in 2018.
Alfonso will additionally become the first member of Congress born in the 2000s.
Sean Duffy and Donald Trump Back Alfonso’s Campaign
The Republican candidate’s victory followed a closely contested primary campaign in which his family connections and limited political experience attracted attention.
President Donald Trump endorsed Alfonso, describing him as a ‘MAGA Warrior’, while his father-in-law, Sean Duffy, actively supported his campaign.
Duffy previously represented Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District from 2011 until 2020 before leaving Congress to pursue other opportunities.
According to PBS Wisconsin, Alfonso’s campaign also received substantial financial support through a political action committee that benefited from a $1 million transfer from Duffy’s former congressional campaign account.
From Construction Work to Congress
Alfonso grew up in northern Wisconsin and graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Before entering the congressional race, he worked in construction and subsequently produced content for the Dan Bongino Show.
During his campaign, he addressed questions about his age and political experience by presenting his youth as an advantage.
He argued that younger Americans deserved greater representation in Washington.
His campaign focused on affordability, conservative social policies and advancing Trump’s political agenda.
Tax Cuts, Healthcare and Housing Feature in His Agenda
Among Alfonso’s proposals is making Trump’s tax cuts permanent, alongside introducing measures intended to reduce healthcare and housing costs.
He has also advocated legislation that would restrict access to girls’ bathrooms to biological females.
The Republican presented these positions as part of his commitment to conservative policies and the president’s legislative priorities.
Marriage to Sean Duffy’s Daughter
Alfonso is married to Evita Duffy, the daughter of Sean Duffy and television personality Rachel Campos-Duffy.
The couple married on June 24, 2022, when both were 22, at one of President Trump’s golf courses in New Jersey.
They welcomed their first child earlier this year.
Alfonso has also spoken about his desire to create a better future for their young daughter, Rosita.
Family Connections Draw Criticism During Campaign
Alfonso’s political rise attracted criticism from some Republicans, who questioned whether his connections to the Duffy family had helped him advance ahead of more politically experienced contenders.
His background and lack of previous elected office became prominent issues during the Republican primary campaign.
However, the criticism did not prevent him from winning the party’s nomination in August or securing the seat in November.
Republicans Face Mixed Results in Wisconsin
Alfonso’s victory provided Republicans with a positive result in Wisconsin, where Democrats recorded gains elsewhere in the state’s congressional elections.
Democratic candidates defeated Republican incumbents Derrick Van Orden in the 3rd Congressional District and Bryan Steil in the 1st Congressional District, flipping both seats.
