Exciting news for South Africa’s rugby community!
According to recent reports, the country’s top four rugby franchises are set to receive a significant financial boost from SA Rugby’s latest revenue distribution.
Revenue Breakdown
A report by the Sunday newspaper Rapport reveals that each of the four major franchises—the Stormers, Bulls, Sharks, and Lions—will each get a share of R50 million from SA Rugby’s R400 million revenue pool.
This move comes after representatives from all 15 of South Africa’s rugby unions were involved in discussions on how to split the funds.
Fair Share for All?
A committee of these union representatives put forward several proposals for distributing the revenue.
These proposals are currently under review and are expected to be approved by SA Rugby’s council in the coming month.
The proposal that seems most likely to pass would see the four big franchises receive a substantial R50 million each.
This is more than a 20% increase from the R41 million they previously got annually.
Boost for Other Teams
Other teams won’t miss out either. The Cheetahs, who play in the EPCR Challenge Cup, are set to get R27 million.
The Griquas and the Pumas are each in line for R24 million, marking almost a 50% increase from their previous R16.4 million annual payment.
Meanwhile, the smaller unions are also benefiting from the revenue split.
Each will receive R17 million, up from the previous R10.5 million they used to get.
What’s Next?
Stay tuned for updates as the final approval from SA Rugby’s council is anticipated soon.
This financial boost could have a significant impact on South African rugby, supporting growth and development across the sport.
