Rapper Kwesta Makes His Acting Debut in South Africa’s Black Brain Pictures Film ‘Piano Love’ Alongside Bontle Modiselle, but Netflix Release Sparks Mixed Reactions

Rapper Kwesta, whose real name is Senzo Vilakazi, has stepped into the acting world with a role in the film “Piano Love,” produced by Black Brain Pictures.

The film also features Bontle Modiselle and showcases Kwesta’s transition from music to acting.

KWESTA AND BONTLE MODISSELLE: NEW ROLE

South African audiences have been vocal about their thoughts on Netflix’s latest film, “Piano Love.”

The movie, which stars musician Kwesta, former Scandal! actor Given Stuurman, and actors Bheki Sibiya and Peter Mashigo, has faced criticism.

Many feel that the film, produced by Mandla N, would have been better suited for Mzansi Biokop (DStv channel 163) rather than a Netflix release.

Mandla N explained to TshisaLIVE that the film aims to reflect the current state of South Africa’s music scene.

“I wanted to create something significant for the culture. I couldn’t secure financing, so I funded it myself and sold it to Netflix,” Mandla shared.

He also revealed that Kwesta, known for his hit “Ngud,” made his acting debut in the film after some initial reluctance.

“I had always thought about acting, but it wasn’t something I pursued seriously,” Kwesta admitted to Sowetan.

Initially hesitant, he changed his mind after Mandla N’s persistence.

SOUTH AFRICANS REACT TO ‘PIANO LOVE’

The response on social media has been mixed. Many viewers took to Twitter to express their disappointment:

  • @MhlangaLindo: “I’m not finished watching it yet. Only saw 30 minutes before I had to stop. I’ll try to watch it during the week when I’m bored at work.”
  • @KingMouze_: “It was a tough watch. I wish I could erase it from my memory. I’m sure we can do better. I think TV writers should stick to writing TV shows, not movies.”
  • @khanyithes33864: “#PianoLove is boring. It should be on channel 163 with other Biskops.”
  • @kay_living_: “Just finished #PianoLove on Netflix and rate it 5/10. It felt rushed, and I expected more. However, Peter Mashigo’s performance was a highlight.”
  • @itsBigSexy_: “3/10. Only Peter Mashigo and Given Stuurman felt natural. The storyline had potential but missed the mark. It could have explored how Hip Hop artists evolved their views on Piano music.”
  • @BonzzyM: “Felt guilty for wanting to support but found it hard to watch. Had to love myself and move on.”

For those interested, the film premiered on Netflix on August 23, 2024, and a teaser for “Piano Love” was shared by Jabulani Macdonald on August 17, 2024.
