This act provides a legal framework for the protection of personal information and the practice of data protection within Nigeria.
The new law also establishes the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, replacing the previous Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB) that was created in February 2022 during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s tenure.
Establishment of Nigeria Data Protection Commission:
The Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 enables the establishment of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission, which will oversee the regulation of personal information processing.
The Commission will be led by a National Commissioner who will bear the responsibility of ensuring the proper handling of personal data.

Dr. Vincent Olatunji, National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Bureau (NDPB), confirmed the signing of the bill into law during the NDPD Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP) validation workshop held in Abuja.
This official confirmation marks a significant step in implementing comprehensive data protection measures within the country.
Legislative Process:
Former President Muhammadu Buhari sent the bill to the Senate and House of Representatives on April 4, 2023, for consideration and passage.
The bill underwent a legislative review before being signed into law by President Tinubu.
The new legislation effectively replaces the NDPB established by President Buhari in February 2022.
Additional Legislation Signed:
In addition to the Nigeria Data Protection Act, President Tinubu also signed other bills into law, including one that raises the retirement age of judicial officers and another related to student loans.
