Philadelphia is saying goodbye to one of its most beloved voices.
Harry Donahue, the legendary broadcaster who became synonymous with Temple University athletics, has passed away at 77 after a battle with cancer.
Fans, colleagues, and the city alike are remembering him not just as a sportscaster, but as a true storyteller who brought games to life.
The Voice of Temple Athletics
Donahue’s connection with Temple University spanned decades.
He became the familiar voice behind the Temple Owls’ men’s basketball and football teams, making fans feel every touchdown, every three-pointer, and every thrilling play.
Temple Athletics confirmed his passing on Wednesday, highlighting how he shared “the passion and pride of Temple Athletics to fans across the city and beyond.”
A Long and Storied Career
Harry’s journey in broadcasting began in 1974 when he joined KYW Newsradio as a freelancer.
Just four years later, he moved into an anchor role, presenting morning news and sports for the station until his retirement in 2014.
His love for sports naturally led him to cover Temple Athletics in 1984, first calling football games on the radio, and eventually taking over as the play-by-play voice for Temple men’s basketball.
Honors and Legacy
His decades of dedication did not go unnoticed. Donahue was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 2000 and later earned a place in the Temple Basketball Ring of Honor in 2020.
Beyond Temple, he covered the Philadelphia Eagles and 76ers and hosted Inside Golf on NBC Sports Philadelphia, becoming a familiar face and voice across multiple sports platforms.
Remembering Harry Donahue
Temple Athletic Director Arthur Johnson reflected on Donahue’s enduring impact: “He was more than the voice of Temple Athletics — he was the heartbeat of our community.
His passion, professionalism, and love for the Owls brought our football and men’s basketball programs to life for countless fans.”
Johnson continued, “Harry’s storytelling connected generations of Temple students, alumni, and supporters.
His legacy will forever echo through our university.
On behalf of Temple Athletics, we extend our deepest condolences to Harry’s family, friends, and all who were touched by his remarkable career.”
A Lasting Influence
Harry Donahue’s voice will live on in the memories of fans who tuned in for decades, feeling the excitement of every game as if they were in the stadium themselves.
His contributions to sports broadcasting and Philadelphia’s community will be remembered for years to come.
