At the ESPYs red carpet, LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne couldn’t hide her pride as she spoke about her boyfriend Paul Skenes’ impressive outing for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Skenes had pitched seven innings of a no-hitter before being pulled after throwing 99 pitches.
Reflecting on Skenes’ achievement, Dunne remarked, “You know what, it would have been a cool accolade to say that you threw a no-hitter your rookie year.
But also, you’ve got to make that arm last long, so I don’t blame them.”
Despite his stellar performance, Skenes expressed disappointment at being taken out of the game.
“Definitely wanted to finish it,” he said postgame.
“Throwing every six days, five days, whatever it is now, I definitely understand that side of it.”
Pirates’ Near Miss and Victory
Unfortunately, after Skenes left the game, the Pirates lost their no-hit bid in the eighth inning.
Nonetheless, they managed to secure a narrow 1-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers, thanks to closer Aroldis Chapman’s solid performance in the ninth inning.
Skenes’ Stellar Season
Skenes’ exceptional season with the Pirates has not gone unnoticed.
His standout performances have earned him not only a spot in the All-Star game but also the honor of starting for the National League.
Olivia Dunne continues to be a supportive presence for Skenes as he navigates his impressive rookie year in Major League Baseball.
