The apex socio-cultural organization of the Igbo people, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has extended its congratulations to Senator Godswill Akpabio on his election as the President of the Nigerian Senate.
According to the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Akpabio’s emergence signifies a promising relationship between the executive and legislative branches of government.
Expectations for Mutual Understanding and Improved Legislation
Isiguzoro emphasized that Nigerians and Ohanaeze Ndigbo anticipate that this harmonious relationship will pave the way for the introduction of bills that will enhance the lives of the Nigerian people.
While acknowledging the alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s recommendations, Isiguzoro emphasized that the independence of the 10th Assembly must also be respected.
Demands Presented to the New Senate President
Ohanaeze Ndigbo also outlined six demands for the new Senate President.
Firstly, they recommended a review of the 1999 Constitution.
Secondly, they called for attention to be given to the discarded South East Development Commission.
Additionally, Ohanaeze expects Akpabio to support the creation of an additional state in the Southeast.
The organization also announced its intention to formally notify Tinubu and the Senate leadership about expediting action for the creation of this sixth state.
These demands reflect the aspirations and concerns of the Igbo community.

Isiguzoro expressed gratitude to Senators Orji Uzor Kalu, Osita Izunaso, and Dave Umahi for stepping down and allowing Akpabio’s emergence as Senate President.
