A routine afternoon commute in New York City reportedly descended into chaos when a woman allegedly launched a verbal and physical attack on a Jewish passenger while riding a crowded subway train in Lower Manhattan.
The incident, which occurred around 2:15 p.m. on Sunday, has since drawn widespread attention after footage surfaced online.
Police identified the suspect as Diana Smith, a Bronx resident, who is now facing multiple charges linked to the alleged assault, including hate crime-related offences.
Antisemitic Slurs Shouted in Front of Commuters
Witness video circulating on social media shows the woman standing inside the train carriage wearing a camouflage jacket while loudly making antisemitic remarks.
She is heard repeatedly shouting, “Jews are eating kids,” in front of shocked passengers.
The footage also appears to capture her directing comments toward a 23-year-old Jewish woman seated nearby.
In a disturbing exchange, she allegedly smiled while speaking directly to the passenger, making further inflammatory statements referencing Jewish people.
Several commuters can be heard reacting in disbelief as the situation escalates inside the packed train car.
Alleged Physical Assault After Verbal Harassment
According to the victim’s account, a nurse from Montreal who asked not to be publicly named, the situation turned physical shortly after the verbal confrontation began.
She said the suspect first targeted her with threats and aggressive remarks before the situation escalated further.
The victim stated that her phone was knocked from her hand during the confrontation, after which she was allegedly choked, pushed to the ground, and had her hair violently pulled.
She said a clump of hair was ripped from her scalp during the struggle.
She also reported suffering a concussion as a result of the incident.
Bystanders Step In as Emergency Button Is Activated
Passengers on the train attempted to de-escalate the situation, but the victim said intervention did not occur until the confrontation had already intensified.
One commuter eventually activated the emergency button, while the victim managed to escape the train at the next stop and seek help from police.
She described the moment as frightening and isolating, noting that she believed more immediate intervention could have prevented the escalation of violence.
Arrest and Hate Crime Charges Filed
Authorities arrested Smith shortly after the incident.
Court records cited by reporters indicate she is facing several charges, including hate crime assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, and aggravated harassment.
Law enforcement officials are treating the case as a bias-motivated attack, given the nature of the alleged statements made during the incident.
Victim Speaks Out About Trauma and Shock
Speaking after the attack, the victim said the experience left her deeply shaken, especially after reviewing footage of the incident that had been shared online.
She recalled that some bystanders later approached her to ask if she was okay, but said she remained distressed and in shock.
She also described the emotional impact of the attack, saying it left her feeling unsafe and overwhelmed by the intensity of what had occurred in such a public space.
Despite the traumatic experience, she credited her escape from the train and quick police response for preventing the situation from becoming even worse.
