Norway booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Côte d’Ivoire, with Erling Haaland once again proving decisive by scoring the winning goal late in the contest.
The Scandinavian side looked set for a tense finish after surrendering their first-half lead, but Haaland struck four minutes from time to send Norway into the knockout stage’s next round for the first time since the 1998 tournament.
The victory also earned Ståle Solbakken’s team a high-profile clash against Brazil on July 5 in New York/New Jersey.
Antonio Nusa Opens the Scoring in Entertaining First Half
Although Norway ultimately progressed, Côte d’Ivoire controlled much of the early play and threatened repeatedly through their attacking wide players.
Left-back Ghislain Konan tested the Norwegian defence before Nicolas Pépé squandered a golden opportunity after meeting an accurate cross from Yan Diomandé.
Despite the African side’s promising start, Norway struck first in the 39th minute through Antonio Nusa.
Receiving possession on the left edge of the penalty area, the winger shifted the ball onto his stronger foot before curling a precise effort beyond the goalkeeper into the far corner.
The goal was Nusa’s first of the tournament and rewarded Norway for gradually growing into the match after absorbing early pressure.
Côte d’Ivoire Respond Through Amad Diallo
Norway nearly doubled their advantage shortly before halftime when Alexander Sørloth nodded the ball into Haaland’s path, but Ibrahim Sangaré produced an important defensive block to deny the prolific striker.
Côte d’Ivoire continued pushing for an equaliser after the interval, and their persistence paid off following the introduction of substitute Amad Diallo.
Having first cleared an effort off his own goal line, Diallo made an impact at the opposite end.
Combining neatly with Pépé in a quick passing move, the winger burst into the penalty area, danced past defenders with quick footwork and rifled a powerful finish beyond goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland to level the match in the 74th minute.
It was Diallo’s second goal as a substitute during the tournament, having previously scored off the bench against Ecuador.
Haaland Extends Remarkable Goalscoring Run
With extra time looming, Norway found the decisive breakthrough in the closing stages.
Patrick Berg delivered a dangerous low cross into the six-yard box, where Haaland reacted quickest to stab the ball home from close range. The finish secured his fifth goal of the 2026 World Cup and marked his 60th international goal for Norway in just 53 appearances.
The strike also extended Haaland’s impressive record of scoring in each of his first three FIFA World Cup appearances, underlining his status as one of the tournament’s standout performers.
Nyland Preserves Norway’s Lead in Dramatic Finale
The closing moments remained tense as Côte d’Ivoire searched desperately for another equaliser.
Diallo nearly forced extra time with a superbly struck free-kick, but Nyland produced an outstanding save to keep the ball out and preserve Norway’s narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The goalkeeper’s intervention ensured Norway held firm to complete a memorable victory and continue their World Cup campaign.
Nusa Recognised for Match-Winning Performance
While Haaland claimed the decisive goal, Antonio Nusa was recognised for his influential display throughout the contest and received the Michelob Ultra Superior Player of the Match award.
His opening goal gave Norway the platform they needed before Haaland eventually settled the tightly contested encounter.
Côte d’Ivoire Exit After Competitive Tournament
Côte d’Ivoire’s World Cup journey came to an end despite an encouraging performance in their first-ever World Cup knockout match.
Head coach Emerse Fae praised his players’ commitment but admitted crucial moments ultimately separated the two teams.
Midfielder Franck Kessié echoed that assessment, describing the contest as evenly balanced while expressing disappointment that small mistakes prevented his side from progressing.
For Norway, however, the victory keeps alive hopes of a deep tournament run as they now prepare for a challenging Round of 16 meeting against Brazil.
