Nollywood has entered the Guinness World Records after more than 51,000 people gathered at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos for a massive screening of the Nigerian crime thriller Black Market.
The record-breaking event took place on Saturday, September 26, turning one of Lagos’ most recognisable public spaces into an enormous open-air cinema packed with thousands of movie lovers.
Guinness World Records confirmed the achievement after the screening, recognising 51,000 viewers as the qualifying attendance and establishing Black Market as the new record holder for the largest audience at a film screening in a single location.
More Than 51,000 Nigerians Gather at TBS
The scale of the turnout became evident hours before the film began.
Large numbers of attendees arrived throughout the afternoon, with queues stretching towards the TBS roundabout as organisers prepared for an attempt originally targeting 50,000 simultaneous viewers.
The gates opened at 2pm, followed by a red-carpet event at approximately 3pm. The main movie screening was scheduled to begin at 7pm.
By the time Black Market appeared on the giant screen, tens of thousands of people had packed the Lagos venue.
Guinness World Records Confirms Historic Achievement
The biggest moment came after the screening when the Guinness World Records result was announced to the crowd.
The qualifying figure exceeded 51,000 viewers, officially breaking the existing record.
Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat announced an overall attendance figure of approximately 64,000 people, although Guinness World Records based its qualifying total on viewers who remained for the movie from beginning to end.
The announcement triggered celebrations and fireworks as the audience learned that the record attempt had succeeded.
Previous Record Had Stood Since 2015
The Nigerian screening surpassed a benchmark that had remained intact for more than a decade.
The previous record stood at 43,624 people and was established in 2015 during a screening of the Filipino film Felix Manalo at the Philippine Arena in the Philippines.
Organisers of the Black Market event had deliberately targeted more than 50,000 viewers in their effort to move comfortably beyond that figure.
With 51,000 qualifying attendees, the Lagos event surpassed the previous record by more than 7,000 people.
FilmOne Celebrates Nigeria’s Record-Breaking Night
FilmOne, which distributes Black Market, celebrated the achievement as a landmark moment for Nigerian cinema.
“51,000+ people. One screen. One moment that just made history,” the company said in its announcement.
FilmOne said what began as a film screening had become a historic gathering, adding that Nigeria had done more than simply watch a movie.
The distributor’s announcement reflected the significance attached to the event by those behind the production, with the turnout demonstrating Nollywood’s ability to mobilise an audience on a scale rarely associated with conventional movie screenings.
Music, Food and Games Turn Screening Into Major Entertainment Event
The record attempt was structured as more than a traditional cinema experience.
Music, games and food were incorporated into the programme as thousands of people waited for the main screening.
The red carpet also attracted actors, entertainers and other public personalities.
Hamzat arrived at the venue later in the evening, while celebrities spotted at the event included Gabriel Afolayan, Real Warri Pikin and Tomi Ojo.
Other Nollywood personalities reported at the screening included Lateef Adedimeji, Kunle Remi, Stan Nze, Linda Ejiofor and Kunle Afolayan.

Black Market follows five market women involved in a cross-border smuggling operation as they navigate fuel scarcity and financial pressure.
Their already dangerous operation takes a more dramatic turn after the daughter of one of the women is kidnapped.
The film combines crime and personal conflict against a backdrop of economic hardship, placing its female characters at the centre of the story.
Fatimah Binta Gimsay Directs Star-Studded Production
Black Market was directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay, who also shares writing credit with Abdul Tijani-Ahmed. Nora Awolowo is credited as a producer.
Its cast includes Omowunmi Dada, Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Scarlet Gomez, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Ibrahim Yekini — popularly known as Itele D Icon — and Uzor Arukwe.
The production brought together Rixel Studios, Signet Ring Studios and FilmOne Studios, with FilmOne handling distribution.
Lagos Government Backs Historic Screening
The Lagos State Government supported the event through its Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, alongside corporate partners involved in the record attempt.
The presence of senior state officials also highlighted the event’s significance beyond the entertainment industry.
Hamzat attended alongside Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture Toke Benson as the gathering moved from an ambitious Nollywood promotional event to a successful world-record attempt.

For Nollywood, the achievement represents a different kind of international milestone.
Nigeria’s film industry has built an enormous domestic and international audience over several decades, but the Black Market event transformed that popularity into a physical gathering of unprecedented scale for a movie screening.
More than 51,000 qualifying viewers watching the same Nigerian film at one venue was enough to surpass a record that had stood since 2015.
For FilmOne and the production teams behind Black Market, the night ultimately became larger than the premiere itself.
Thousands arrived at Tafawa Balewa Square to watch a Nollywood crime thriller. By the end of the screening, they had become part of a Guinness World Record.
