Nigeria’s N10 Trillion Local Government Cash Mystery Sparks Fresh Outrage as States Ignore Supreme Court Ruling

Concerns are mounting over the implementation of financial autonomy for Nigeria’s local government councils despite a landmark Supreme Court ruling intended to guarantee direct access to federal allocations.

Although the judgment was expected to end state control over local government funds, reports indicate that many states continue to manage the allocations through the existing joint account system.

This has raised questions about whether the ruling has translated into meaningful reforms at the grassroots level.

Investigations show that local governments collectively received about N10.48 trillion in federal allocations between July 2024 and June 2026.

However, labour representatives say direct payments from the Federal Government have yet to begin, suggesting that the intended financial independence remains largely unrealised.

Dispute Deepens Over Nurse’s Death at David Umahi’s Residence

The circumstances surrounding the death of a 26-year-old nurse, Mary Habila, have continued to generate public attention in Ebonyi State.

Minister of Works David Umahi and the Ebonyi State Police Command are insisting that an autopsy be conducted to determine the exact cause of her death after her body was reportedly discovered at the minister’s residence in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area.

The position taken by both the minister and the police differs sharply from that of the deceased’s father, Tanko Habila, who has approached the Ebonyi State High Court seeking to halt the police investigation.

He has also declined permission for an autopsy, maintaining that the family does not believe foul play was involved.

The differing positions have added another layer of complexity to an investigation that continues to attract widespread public interest.

Gbajabiamila Takes Legal Action Over Kickback Allegations

Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has initiated a N15 billion defamation lawsuit against Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi over allegations relating to a proposed government agency.

The lawsuit follows claims that Gbajabiamila demanded a 48 percent kickback from a proposed N27.3 billion take-off grant.

The presidential aide has strongly rejected the accusations, stating that he has never met Adeyemi and did not authorise anyone to act on his behalf.

In addition to financial compensation, the suit seeks a formal retraction of the allegations and a public apology.

INEC Eyes Trial Presidential Election Before 2027 Polls

Nigeria’s electoral commission is exploring new measures aimed at improving confidence in the country’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Among the proposals being considered are a comprehensive review of the commission’s election technology infrastructure and the organisation of a nationwide mock presidential election to test operational readiness before the actual polls.

INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan (SAN), disclosed the plans while receiving British High Commissioner Dr Richard Montgomery during an official visit to the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

Officials believe the exercise could help identify technical weaknesses and improve preparations well before Nigerians return to the polls.

Trump Administration Introduces New Time Limit for Foreign Students

Beyond Nigeria, one of the biggest international developments comes from the United States, where President Donald Trump’s administration has introduced a significant change to student visa regulations.

Under the new policy, most international students and exchange visitors holding F-1 and J-1 visas will be limited to a maximum stay of four years.

According to the US Department of Homeland Security, the measure is designed to strengthen immigration enforcement while reducing the number of visa overstays.

The policy is expected to affect thousands of foreign students planning to study or participate in exchange programmes in the United States.
