An emotional story of survival has emerged from the aftermath of Venezuela’s devastating earthquakes after a young mother revealed that her 18-day-old son became the reason she refused to give up while trapped beneath the ruins of their apartment building.
Dayana Patino, who was rescued alongside her newborn son Juan David, said the infant’s presence gave her the determination to stay conscious during the terrifying hours they spent buried under collapsed concrete.
She explained that she repeatedly checked her son’s breathing by gently touching his nose, convinced that as long as he remained alive, she had to keep fighting as well.
Rescue Offers Rare Hope Amid National Tragedy
The dramatic rescue of the mother and child has captured global attention, with footage of the operation widely shared across social media.
Juan David has become a symbol of hope in a country still reeling from two powerful earthquakes that struck on Wednesday.
The disaster has claimed at least 1,450 lives, while tens of thousands of people remain unaccounted for as emergency crews continue searching through mountains of debris.
Authorities have warned that the chances of locating additional survivors are becoming increasingly slim as time passes.
Ordinary Morning Turned Into Disaster
Before the earthquakes struck, Dayana had been washing dishes inside the family’s eighth-floor apartment in La Guaira, a coastal region north of Caracas.
When she felt the ground begin to shake, she instinctively picked up her baby, believing it would be nothing more than a minor tremor.
Instead, the violent shaking threw her through the apartment as the building collapsed around them.
She recalled feeling as though she had been tossed through the air before becoming trapped beneath rubble and furniture, somehow managing to keep hold of her baby despite the chaos.
Calmness Became Her Greatest Weapon
Although seriously injured and unable to move because one of her legs was pinned beneath concrete, Dayana resisted the urge to waste energy by shouting continuously.
Instead, she decided she would only call for help if she heard rescuers nearby.
She also endured the pain of having her head pressed against a large rock while remaining trapped in darkness.
During those desperate moments, she said discovering a Bible beneath the debris strengthened her resolve to survive.
A tiny opening that allowed in a faint beam of light also became a source of encouragement as she waited for rescue.
Brother’s Voice Led to Freedom
Hope finally arrived when Dayana heard someone calling her name from outside the collapsed building.
Recognizing the voice of her brother, she gathered all the strength she had left and shouted back.
Her brother assured her he had located her and promised not to leave until she and the baby were safely rescued.
A delicate operation followed on Thursday night, eventually freeing both mother and child from the rubble.
While Dayana suffered injuries to both legs, doctors said Juan David escaped with only minor injuries.
Husband Witnesses a Miracle
Dayana’s husband, Gerson, had only just returned home when the earthquakes struck.
After parking his vehicle, he managed to escape by jumping over a nearby fence.
Looking at the destroyed apartment block, he feared his wife and newborn son had not survived.
Those fears disappeared when rescuers finally brought them out alive.

Reflecting on the moment, he said he had believed he had lost his family forever and described seeing them alive as a miracle that gave him a new lease on life.
Family Faces Fresh Start After Losing Everything
Although the family survived, their home was completely destroyed and nearly all of their belongings were lost in the disaster.
They are also grieving the disappearance of their pet dog, which has not yet been found.
Despite the enormous loss, the couple remain determined to rebuild their lives from the ground up.
They say material possessions can be replaced and are grateful that they still have each other as they begin the difficult journey of starting over after one of Venezuela’s deadliest natural disasters.
