A group of youths, some of whom were wearing balaclavas and dressed in black, were captured on video running away from a scene at Notting Hill Carnival after eight individuals were stabbed during one night. The youths were observed sprinting down a street in west London, with one of them holding what appeared to be a machete. Police on horseback attempted to pursue the group as onlookers watched. While some members of the group looked back as they fled, others did not. The context of their flight remains unclear, but comments on the video suggested avoidance of the event on Monday, known as “adults day.”
The Metropolitan Police reported that the final day of Notting Hill Carnival witnessed “serious violence,” with eight people being stabbed. While the weekend initially displayed a “positive” and “good-natured” atmosphere, the situation escalated into violence on Bank Holiday Monday. A 29-year-old man sustained critical injuries after being stabbed in Warfield Road, near Harrow Road, shortly after 9pm. Multiple other stabbings occurred leading up to this incident, and a police officer was bitten.
A 19-year-old man was stabbed in Ladbroke Grove just before 8pm and is in serious but stable condition in the hospital. Six other men, aged 18 to 40, were stabbed in separate incidents, with their injuries not life-threatening. The Met conducted a total of 275 arrests over the two-day event. On Sunday, there were 110 arrests for offenses including carrying offensive weapons, assaults (including those against police officers), drug possession, and sexual offenses. Some additional arrests were made on Monday for similar offenses, including assaults on police officers and sexual assaults.
In the midst of the celebratory atmosphere, there were incidents of concern. A group in possession of a firearm was intercepted by police, resulting in the seizure of the weapon and the arrest of an individual. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Ade Adelekan expressed regret that for the second consecutive year, Monday night at the carnival had been marred by serious violence. While acknowledging the positive aspects of the event, he also highlighted the stabbings, assaults, and attacks on police officers that occurred. The police will be reviewing the events and considering potential changes for future years.
