A serious accusation has rocked the MK Party in Mpumalanga.
Mary Phadi, a former convenor of the party in the province, has come forward with claims that the party’s deputy president, John Hlophe, made sexual advances toward her.
Phadi has requested that Hlophe be suspended immediately while she seeks justice for what she describes as sexual harassment.
Phadi’s Letter to Jacob Zuma and Allegations of Sexual Harassment
Phadi’s accusations gained attention over the weekend when a letter she wrote to party leader Jacob Zuma was shared widely on social media.
In the letter, Phadi detailed the alleged harassment and expressed her desire for Hlophe to be suspended.
In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, she confirmed writing the letter and vowed to go to court to prove her claims, with supporting messages available as evidence.
Phadi also pointed out that Zuma had not responded to her letter in a timely manner, further intensifying the situation.
“He must be suspended with immediate effect, the way he wanted me to be suspended with allegations that do not exist,” Phadi remarked.
“This will show that uMkhonto weSizwe Party cares about everyone’s well-being.”
Phadi Responds to MK Party’s Potential Dismissal of Her Claims
When asked whether the MK Party might dismiss her allegations as the complaints of a disgruntled member, Phadi emphasized how damaging that would be for the party’s reputation.
“It would indeed be unfortunate because MK must show that they support women who stand up against abuse,” she said.
“This is about creating a space where women can lead and fight for change within political parties.”
Phadi made it clear that her commitment to the MK Party was not motivated by personal gain but by loyalty and principles.
“I am here because I followed a president when it was not fashionable to do so,” she explained.
Phadi Insists She Remains the Convenor of the MK Party in Mpumalanga
Despite her firing from the MK Party last November, Phadi continues to assert her position as the leader of the party in Mpumalanga.
The party had dismissed her over allegations of financial mismanagement and a plot to assassinate a rival.
However, in a surprising turn of events, the Mpumalanga High Court ruled in Phadi’s favor in December, ordering her reinstatement as both the province’s convenor and a member of the Mpumalanga legislature.
Instead of honoring the court’s decision, the MK Party chose to appoint Busisiwe Mkhwebane, a former member of Parliament from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), as the new party leader in the legislature.
What Happens Next for Phadi and the MK Party?
The situation remains tense as both Phadi’s allegations and her legal battles continue.
As the MK Party faces mounting pressure, questions linger about the future of the party leadership and its treatment of Phadi’s claims.
Will the party take action, or will these serious allegations be dismissed? Only time will tell.
