Marc Cucurella has opened up about the struggles within Chelsea’s dressing room, highlighting the difficulties players face after another summer marked by substantial spending and several high-profile departures.
Cucurella, who is currently representing Spain in international duties, described the environment at Chelsea as “difficult,” particularly given the constant changes within the squad.
New Arrivals and Departures
During the recent transfer window, Chelsea saw 11 new players join the team while some notable names, including Raheem Sterling and Conor Gallagher, left the club.
Sterling has moved to Arsenal on loan, continuing the trend of significant player turnover under the ownership of Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.
Ongoing Managerial Changes
Since the high-profile takeover in May 2022, Chelsea has invested over a billion pounds in new players.
This period has also seen several managerial changes.
Despite this, head coach Enzo Maresca faces the challenge of managing a large squad this season, with some players even training separately from the main group.
Cucurella’s Perspective on Team Morale
Cucurella, who has experienced a more cohesive environment with the Spanish national team, noted the stark contrast at Chelsea.
“It is true that it is difficult,” Cucurella shared with EFE.
“Here with Spain, it’s much easier to foster a good atmosphere.
At Chelsea, there’s a lot of change, with many players leaving and others coming in. I try to give my best.”
Importance of Stability
Reflecting on Spain’s success in Euro 2024, Cucurella emphasized the role of a solid team spirit.
“One of the keys to our success in the Euro was the strong group we had,” he explained.
“In tournaments like these, being together all the time helps, and if we hadn’t gotten along, it would have been challenging.
I try to naturally create a positive environment wherever I am.”
Call for Patience with Maresca
Cucurella also urged the Chelsea hierarchy to exercise patience with Maresca, who is the fifth coach under the current regime.
He believes that stability and calm are crucial for the team’s success.
“I’m happy with the coach we have; he has very clear ideas,” Cucurella said.
“We need to see if we can achieve stability without many changes so that the coach can fully implement his vision.
We have high-level players, and with patience, we can achieve something important.”
Looking Ahead
As Chelsea continues to navigate through a period of significant transition, Cucurella’s insights highlight the need for stability and a cohesive environment to foster long-term success.
