Manchester United’s defensive problems have continued after their 1-1 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road, leaving them among only two Premier League teams yet to keep a clean sheet this season.
Newly promoted Ipswich Town are the other side without a shutout. United have conceded against every opponent they have faced so far, including Hull City, Ipswich, Everton, Manchester City, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds.
They conceded twice against Hull, allowed two goals against Ipswich despite securing their only league victory at this stage of the campaign, and drew 2-2 with Everton. Their latest result against Leeds marked a third consecutive 1-1 draw in the Premier League.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored for Leeds to ensure United dropped points again, marking the second time in three matches that they had surrendered a winning position.
Defensive Changes Expose United’s Problems at Elland Road
United’s defensive setup against Leeds involved several players operating outside their usual positions as the team moved between a back four and a back five.
The side started with a right-back at left-back and a centre-back at right-back. By the end of the match, another right-back had moved into central defence, while a right winger and additional right-backs filled wing-back positions.
Luke Shaw was unavailable through injury, while Patrick Dorgu was also absent from his usual defensive role. Noussair Mazraoui returned to action after an injury layoff but appeared uncomfortable at centre-back.
A mismatch involving Mazraoui at a corner contributed to Leeds’ equaliser.
Lisandro Martinez had delivered what was described as United’s strongest defensive half of the season before being forced off at half-time with a knock. United’s defensive performance deteriorated after his departure.
The Argentine defender watched from the bench as Leeds scored, while chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox were seen reacting with frustration at the final whistle.
Harry Maguire Calls for Greater Courage From Defenders
Harry Maguire, who was named Player of the Match at Elland Road, said United needed to improve their defending, particularly when dealing with set pieces.
He said the team had felt comfortable in its back-three formation and had limited Leeds’ opportunities, making the goal conceded after half-time especially disappointing.
“When you come to places like this, you can’t be beaten on set plays and we conceded a set play which got them back in the game,” Maguire said.
He added that United had been forced to work hard to protect their point after conceding.
The defender also acknowledged that the team lacked the courage and composure required to win matches consistently.
“We’re in a circumstance where we are not as brave as we should be, and we have to get that back because to win games for Man Utd we have to have that bravery and composure,” he said.
His comments highlighted concerns within the squad about the defensive mentality as well as the tactical and personnel issues affecting the team.
United’s Wider Problems Extend Beyond the Defence
United have several other areas to address, including their attacking output and in-game decision-making.
Bruno Fernandes operated as a false nine against Leeds but struggled to influence the match. The team also failed to make sufficient use of its scoring opportunities.
Manager Michael Carrick’s substitutions did not produce the desired improvement, according to the match assessment, as United were unable to regain control after Leeds equalised.
Defensive errors have also contributed to the team’s inconsistent results, although some incidents have involved disputed decisions. The Manchester City goal scored at Old Trafford, for example, was described in the match analysis as one that should not have stood.
Nevertheless, United’s inability to prevent opponents from scoring has remained a recurring problem throughout the opening matches of the campaign.
Summer Transfer Decisions Come Under Scrutiny
The club’s decision to postpone significant defensive recruitment until next summer has come under renewed scrutiny as the team continues to concede goals.
Wilcox and other senior figures had been aware of the need to strengthen the backline but did not complete the anticipated rebuild during the summer.
United’s current defensive options also face questions about their long-term futures. Maguire and Martinez are both out of contract in 2027, although the club holds options to extend their deals.
Diogo Dalot’s position is also under examination ahead of the planned defensive changes, while Shaw’s contract is due to expire next June. Questions remain over the long-term prospects of Mazraoui and other members of the defence.
The club will have to assess those situations as it considers how to improve its defensive personnel.
United’s Poor Start Leaves Them With One League Win
The draw against Leeds means United have won just one of their first seven Premier League matches, recording four draws and two defeats in addition to that victory.
It is their lowest number of wins at this stage of a top-flight season since the 1986-87 campaign.
United are also ranked 16th in the Premier League form table across the previous four league matches, underlining their recent difficulties.
Martinez previously expressed frustration with the club’s standing after a defeat against Atletico Madrid, saying: “This is not a club at Champions League level.”
The latest result against Leeds has added to the pressure on United to improve their performances, with defensive recruitment and the team’s immediate ability to stop conceding likely to remain major issues in the coming weeks.
