Celtic produced a commanding performance at Celtic Park, defeating Hearts 7-1 in a Scottish Premiership clash that saw the visitors struggle to contain the home side’s attacking threat.

Hearts conceded twice within the opening 10 minutes, with defensive lapses putting them under immediate pressure and leaving them with a difficult task for the remainder of the match.

Liam Scales opened the scoring by winning a near-post header from a corner, while Kieran Tierney was left unmarked a few yards from goal and forced the ball into the net.

Celtic added a second when Dane Murray won his battle with Claudio Braga and helped the ball towards Benjamin Nygren, who finished the opportunity.

Hearts Struggle to Contain Celtic’s Attack

Hearts arrived in Glasgow with a poor away record, having won only two of their previous 11 league away matches across the current and preceding seasons. Both victories had come against Hibernian.

The visitors attempted to play an attacking game, pushing their defensive line high up the pitch. However, their approach left considerable space behind the defence for Celtic’s forwards to exploit.

Celtic repeatedly took advantage of misplaced passes and defensive mistakes, turning possession into dangerous attacking situations.

Haissem Hassan struck the post after getting away from Stephen Kingsley, while Celtic continued to create chances through the movement and pace of their forwards.

Colby Donovan Helps Keep Josh McPake Quiet

Hearts briefly showed signs of settling into the match during the first half, enjoying spells of possession after the difficult opening period.

However, Celtic defender Colby Donovan played an important role in limiting the influence of Josh McPake, one of Hearts’ in-form players.

Donovan won two direct duels against McPake within three minutes, preventing the Hearts attacker from gaining an advantage on either occasion.

The defensive contributions helped Celtic maintain control before the home side resumed their scoring run.

Osmand and Duran Punish Defensive Errors

Hearts’ defensive problems continued as the match progressed, with individual mistakes providing Celtic with further opportunities.

Sabri Guendouz lost possession, allowing Camilo Duran to combine with Callum Osmand before Osmand scored Celtic’s third goal.

Jamie McCart was then caught out in another defensive lapse, with Osmand finding the net again after impressive work from Duran.

Celtic’s attacking players continued to exploit the space available, while Hearts struggled to maintain their defensive shape.

Celtic Extend Their Lead Despite Hearts Scoring

The scoreline continued to grow as Celtic took advantage of Hearts’ inability to stop their attacks.

Mika Baur produced a slaloming run past Josh McPake and Malachi Fagan-Walcott before attempting a shot. Deflections involving Kingsley and McCart helped the ball into the net, giving Celtic a 5-1 advantage.

Laurent Mendy was subsequently involved in the defensive error that led to Celtic’s sixth goal, while Tomas Magnusson featured in the sequence that produced the seventh.

Duran and Nygren also completed their scoring contributions with composed finishes as Celtic reached seven goals.

The hosts finished the match with a 7-1 victory, with seven minutes remaining when the prospect of an even larger margin was being discussed.

Statistics Highlight Hearts’ Problems in Possession

Despite the heavy defeat, Hearts recorded stronger numbers than Celtic in several statistical categories.

The visitors registered 20 shots compared with Celtic’s 18, and managed 16 attempts inside the penalty area against Celtic’s 13. Hearts also had 52% possession, compared with the home side’s 48%.

They recorded 16 crosses to Celtic’s 10, won 51% of the duels and completed more passes in the opposition half, with 244 compared with Celtic’s 202.

Hearts also completed 458 accurate passes, ahead of Celtic’s 423.

However, the statistics did not prevent the visitors from being punished for mistakes in possession and defensive positioning.

Vrancken Faces Questions Over Hearts’ Approach

Hearts manager Wouter Vrancken pointed to individual errors when discussing the defeat, while the team’s attacking approach and defensive organisation were also highlighted during the match.

Hearts repeatedly left space behind their defensive line, allowing Celtic to use their pace and movement to create opportunities.

The visitors struggled to recover after conceding the early goals, and their performance deteriorated as Celtic continued to find openings.

Hearts’ players appeared increasingly affected by the scoreline, with their passing and defensive coordination becoming less effective as the game went on.

Celtic Gain Momentum in the Title Race

The victory provided a boost for Celtic manager Martin O’Neill following a difficult recent period.

Osmand delivered an influential performance, while Nygren, Duran and Hassan also contributed to the home side’s attacking display.

The performance could give O’Neill further options when deciding how to structure Celtic’s forward line, particularly after Osmand’s contribution to the victory.

Hearts had enjoyed a stronger record against Celtic during the previous season, winning two of their four meetings, drawing one and losing one. Their latest defeat, however, raised questions about whether they can maintain a sustained challenge over the course of the current campaign.

Celtic will look to build on the emphatic result as the season continues, while Hearts will need to address their defensive problems and poor away form.
