Veteran actor Tim Matheson, best known for playing Eric “Otter” Stratton in the 1978 comedy National Lampoon’s Animal House, has been spotted during a rare public outing in Los Angeles.
The 78-year-old actor visited the Verdugo Aquatic Facility in Burbank for a swim, dressed casually in a plain black short-sleeved shirt, blue sweatpants and black sneakers.
Matheson carried a backpack and a colourful towel as he approached the facility. He was later seen sitting on a chair in the sunshine while looking through his phone.
The Daily Mail said it had contacted Matheson’s representative for comment but had not received a response at the time of publication.
Acting Career Began When He Was 13
Born in December 1947 in Glendale, California, Matheson began working professionally as a teenager.
His first acting credit came in 1961, when he appeared in an episode of the television series Window on Main Street at the age of 13.
He subsequently secured smaller roles in productions including Leave It to Beaver, My Three Sons, Jonny Quest and Ripcord, gradually building a career across television and film.
In 1967, Matheson appeared alongside Dick Van Dyke and Debbie Reynolds in the satirical comedy Divorce American Style. The following year, he featured in the family comedy-drama Yours, Mine and Ours, starring Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda.
Matheson Recalled Working With Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda
During an appearance on the Still Here Hollywood podcast, Matheson reflected on his experience working with Ball and Fonda on Yours, Mine and Ours.
He recalled how actors spent much of their time waiting on set between scenes, describing the different ways the two established performers approached their work.
Matheson said Fonda was attempting to give up smoking during the production and spent time doing needlepoint while waiting to be called.
He also praised Fonda’s acting style, describing him as grounded and authentic rather than someone who tried to imitate Ball’s broader comedic approach.
Animal House Became One of His Best-Known Roles
Matheson reached a wider audience in 1978 when he portrayed Eric “Otter” Stratton in National Lampoon’s Animal House.
The comedy featured an ensemble cast that included John Belushi, John Vernon, Thomas Hulce, Verna Bloom and Donald Sutherland.
Produced on a budget of approximately $3 million, the film reportedly earned around $141 million at the box office, becoming a major commercial success.
Matheson continued working in films after its release, appearing in titles including the 1979 war comedy 1941, To Be or Not to Be in 1983, Impulse in 1984 and Fletch in 1985.
He also appeared in the 1996 comedy A Very Brady Sequel as he continued to move between film and television projects.
Two Emmy Nominations for The West Wing
During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Matheson maintained a steady television career, with appearances in productions including Wolf Lake, The King of Queens and Without a Trace.
One of his notable television roles came in The West Wing, where he played Vice President John Hoynes from 1999 to 2006.
His performance earned him two Emmy nominations in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series category.
Matheson later played Dr Brick Breeland in the CW series Hart of Dixie and appeared in other television productions, including The Good Fight, The Affair, The Goldbergs, Madam Secretary, This Is Us and Quantum Leap.
Virgin River Keeps the Actor on Screen
Matheson has continued acting in recent years, taking on the role of Dr Vernon Mullins in Netflix’s romantic drama series Virgin River.
His character is a doctor in the fictional Northern California community at the centre of the show. Matheson has been part of the series since 2019.
The programme was renewed for an eighth season in July last year, extending its run on the streaming platform.
In an interview with Parade earlier this year, Matheson discussed the show’s emphasis on relationships and community support.
He said friends, family members and loved ones could help people through difficult periods and share in their happier moments.
The actor also argued that social media activity should not be confused with genuine personal relationships, describing Virgin River as a throwback to The Andy Griffith Show and its portrayal of a close-knit community.
Recent Television Appearance Adds to His Long Career
Matheson most recently appeared in five episodes of 9-1-1: Nashville, continuing a career that has spanned more than six decades.
From his early television appearances as a teenager to his role in Animal House, his Emmy-nominated performance in The West Wing and his work on Virgin River, the actor has remained active across several generations of film and television.
