Arsenal secured a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Sunday, with substitute Noni Madueke scoring the decisive goal in the 80th minute.

The England winger found the net after his angled effort took a deflection off Forest defender Jair Cunha, leaving goalkeeper Matz Sels unable to prevent the ball from going in.

The result lifted Arsenal back into second place in the Premier League standings, following a match in which they struggled to break down a disciplined Forest defence for much of the contest.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta introduced several substitutes in the second half in an effort to change the game, and Madueke ultimately made the difference.

Forest Frustrate Arsenal During a Cautious First Half

Arsenal entered the match looking to maintain their challenge near the top of the table, having started the day six points behind Manchester City.

Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka returned to the starting line-up, while Eberechi Eze was selected ahead of Madueke on the left. However, Eze was substituted at half-time after an ineffective first-half performance.

Forest approached the match cautiously, with Morgan Gibbs-White unavailable after missing training throughout the week because of a muscular problem.

The hosts had collected only five points and had not won a league match at the City Ground since April. Their manager, Oliver Glasner, opted for a defensive approach against the visitors.

Arsenal dominated possession during the opening 15 minutes, but struggled to create clear opportunities against Forest’s organised back line.

Xaver Schlager covered considerable ground in midfield, while Murillo delivered a strong defensive performance. Liam Delap also kept Arsenal defenders Gabriel and Ezri Konsa occupied throughout the first half.

Forest Create the First Clear Opportunity

Despite spending much of the opening period defending, Forest created the first significant chance of the match.

Nico Dominguez, who started in place of Gibbs-White, capitalised on a misplaced pass from Riccardo Calafiori. Delap then collected a deflected cross from Daniel Munoz before setting up Dan Ndoye, whose attempt was turned around the post.

Murillo later suffered a cut to his face following a collision with Konsa while attempting to meet a corner delivered by Neco Williams.

Arsenal also threatened from a set piece, with Saka delivering a corner that Calafiori flicked towards Gabriel. The Brazilian defender attempted a backheel towards goal, but the ball struck Konsa and rebounded away from danger.

That chance proved to be one of Arsenal’s few notable attacking moments before the interval.

Arteta Makes Changes After Frustrating First Half

Arsenal continued to struggle after the restart, prompting Arteta to make a series of substitutions.

Eze was withdrawn at half-time, with Madueke introduced in his place. Later, Jurrien Timber, Mikel Merino and Viktor Gyokeres came on as Arteta sought to improve his team’s attacking output.

Kai Havertz, Bruno Guimaraes and Ben White were among those replaced during the changes.

Timber made an immediate contribution when he advanced into the penalty area from the right and supplied an unmarked Declan Rice. However, Rice failed to convert his opportunity from approximately 15 yards.

The missed chance briefly maintained Forest’s hopes of earning a point, as Arsenal continued searching for a breakthrough.

Madueke Finds the Winner in the 80th Minute

Arsenal eventually broke the deadlock with 10 minutes remaining.

A clearance from Forest defender Jair Cunha reached Rice, who moved the ball to Madueke. The winger drove into the penalty area before shooting across goal.

His attempt struck Cunha’s left thigh and changed direction, leaving Sels unable to make the save.

The goal gave Arsenal the lead and proved decisive, as Forest were unable to find an equaliser despite creating further opportunities.

Rice and Konsa Help Arsenal Protect Their Lead

Forest threatened late in the match as they attempted to rescue a result on home soil.

Substitute Callum Hudson-Odoi found Chris Wood, but the forward took too long to get his shot away, allowing Rice to recover and make an important defensive block.

Murillo also produced an impressive piece of skill to move past Rice before shooting towards the Trent End rather than finding the target.

Konsa subsequently blocked another attempt from Delap, helping Arsenal preserve their advantage until the final whistle.

The defensive interventions ensured Arsenal left Nottingham with all three points, despite their difficulties in creating chances for much of the match.

Nottingham Forest Remain Under Pressure

The defeat extended Forest’s difficult start to the season, with the team still searching for a league win and a home goal at the City Ground.

Glasner received a rating of six out of 10 for his management of the match, while Delap was Forest’s highest-rated player with eight.

Diomande, Murillo, McAtee, Schlager, Ndoye and Dominguez each received seven out of 10. Goalkeeper Sels, Cunha and Munoz were rated six, while Williams also received six.

Arsenal manager Arteta was awarded six out of 10. Madueke and Timber each received seven after their contributions from the bench, while Rice, Konsa and Gabriel also earned seven.

White, Eze and Havertz were rated five out of 10.
