Former Manchester United players came together in Manchester on Saturday night to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Sir Alex Ferguson’s appointment as manager of the club.

Ferguson was appointed on November 7, 1986, after leaving Scottish side Aberdeen.

His arrival marked the beginning of what would become the most successful era in Manchester United’s history, with the legendary manager winning 37 trophies during his 27 years in charge.

Several former players who worked under Ferguson attended the anniversary celebration to honour their former manager.

Actor and lifelong Manchester United supporter James Nesbitt shared a group photograph from the gathering on Instagram.

The picture featured Ferguson alongside current United manager Michael Carrick and several former players.

Among those present were Nemanja Vidic, Robin van Persie, Darren Fletcher, Jonny Evans, Javier Hernandez and John O’Shea.

Ferguson’s Legacy Spanned Generations of United Stars

During his time at Old Trafford, Ferguson played a central role in developing some of football’s biggest names.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and David Beckham were among the high-profile players whose careers benefited from his management and guidance.

His 27-year tenure established an unprecedented period of success for United, making him one of the most decorated managers in football history.

Carrick, who also played under Ferguson, has previously acknowledged the former manager’s importance as he attempts to improve the club’s current fortunes.

Carrick Faces Uncertain Future Ahead of Aston Villa Clash

The anniversary gathering comes at a difficult period for Manchester United, with Carrick attempting to stabilise the team following a disappointing start to the Premier League campaign.

United dropped into the relegation zone on Saturday night after Nottingham Forest defeated Manchester City.

Carrick’s position had also come under intense scrutiny following a 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford.

However, the United hierarchy decided to give him another opportunity, and the team responded with an impressive 3-2 comeback victory over Roma in the Champions League on Tuesday.

United are now preparing to host Unai Emery’s Aston Villa at Old Trafford, although Carrick has admitted that he has received no assurances about his long-term future.

Speaking ahead of the match, he said he was concentrating on the next fixture rather than worrying about what might happen to his position.

“Whatever is going to happen is going to happen.

I’m really looking forward to the next game, playing at home on the back of the other night,” Carrick said.

He also expressed hope that supporters would arrive at Old Trafford feeling encouraged by the team’s recent performance.

“The supporters are hopefully looking forward to coming energised and feeling good about what they might see, and we’ve got to repay that,” he added.

Carrick Rules Out Major Changes During International Break

Carrick also discussed his plans for the upcoming international break, explaining that he intended to follow his usual routine rather than take additional time away from football.

He said the break would provide an opportunity for players to recover and regain their energy, particularly those travelling to represent their countries.

“Not really different to normal. Genuinely not. I think international breaks are always a time to re-energise and freshen up,” he explained.

Carrick added that United would continue training during the period, although the exact arrangements would depend on the players available.

“We’ll certainly train next week and maybe have the weekend off.

We’ll see how that develops, who’s left behind, who’s with us and what they need,” he said.

Carrick Addresses Tension With Bruno Fernandes

The United manager also addressed reports of tension between himself and captain Bruno Fernandes following disagreements over tactics.

The controversy emerged after Fernandes criticised Carrick’s tactical approach following United’s Champions League defeat to Como last month.

Fernandes subsequently missed the Bournemouth match, with the midfielder explaining that his omission was related to a dip in form.

He also disputed reports that the pair had held a meeting to resolve their differences.

However, Carrick insisted that their relationship remained positive and that communication between them had continued.

“There are always conversations, bits going on; acknowledging certain things of when things are going well, what we need to improve on as a group,” he said.

He explained that discussions within the team sometimes involved individual players and, on other occasions, the entire squad.

“Sometimes it’s individually, sometimes it’s group. We always have discussions. What’s actually said in that discussion, I’ll keep that to myself,” Carrick added.

The manager also praised Fernandes’ commitment and contribution to Manchester United, pointing to his performance against Roma as evidence.

Fernandes scored during the comeback victory after being required to retake a penalty, and Carrick highlighted his response to the situation.

He said: “Bruno’s commitment is undoubted for me (in terms) of what he brings to this team and this club.”

Carrick added that the midfielder’s actions during the Roma match demonstrated his continued importance to the team.

“Bruno’s as good as ever,” he concluded.
