On Tuesday, residents of Kano State began what they referred to as a warm-up protest in response to the recent hike in petrol prices.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have planned this protest to express their opposition to what they perceive as unfavorable policies implemented by the new Bola Tinubu-led government.
Coordinated by Joint Action Front (JAF):
SaharaReporters confirmed that the protest was organized and coordinated by the Joint Action Front (JAF).
In solidarity with the cause, a civil service organization, JAF, alongside the Alliance for Surviving COVID-19 and Beyond (ASCAB) and Coalition for Revolution (CORE), declared their full support for the nationwide action planned by the Nigeria Labour Congress on August 2.
Supporting the Protest:
In a joint declaration, Femi Falana (ASCAB), Baba Ayelabola (CORE), and Achike Chude (JAF) signed a statement reaffirming their commitment to participate in the protest until their objectives were achieved.
The civic organizations strongly expressed their support for the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) decision to call upon Nigerian workers and the impoverished masses to join in the protest against the allegedly wicked and neoliberal policies of the President Tinubu-led government.
These policies include the significant increase in the price of petrol and the devaluation of the naira.
Conclusion:
The warm-up protest in Kano State marks the beginning of a series of planned nationwide resistance against the fuel price hike and perceived anti-poor policies of the current government.
The involvement of various civic organizations indicates the growing discontent among the public over the economic measures implemented by the government.
As the protest unfolds, it remains to be seen how the authorities will respond and if the voices of the protesters will lead to any policy changes.
