Jordanian air defenses intercepted eight missiles after they entered the country’s airspace, according to a statement from the Jordanian military, as regional tensions intensified following Iranian claims that US military facilities in Jordan had been targeted.
The Jordanian Armed Forces said the missiles violated the country’s airspace and were intercepted by its air defense systems. Officials did not immediately identify the type of missiles involved.
Jordan Reports Ballistic Missiles and Drones Intercepted
Jordan’s Petra news agency quoted the official spokesperson for the Jordanian Air Force as confirming that eight missiles had been intercepted.
Separately, Al Hadath television, citing a Jordanian military spokesperson, reported that Jordanian air defenses had destroyed ballistic missiles and drones launched from Iran.
The military official said the operation to intercept the aerial threats had subsequently been completed.
Iran Claims US Facilities Were Targeted
The reported interceptions came shortly after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that it had struck US military bases in Jordan.
According to the Iranian account, the attacks destroyed maintenance infrastructure and sites used for the deployment of fighter aircraft. Iranian authorities did not provide further details about the alleged damage or identify the specific facilities involved.
Tehran Links Attack to US Strike on Iran
Iran said its operation against US positions in Jordan was carried out in response to an American attack on Larak Island in southern Iran.
The competing claims have emerged amid heightened regional tensions, with Iran portraying its actions as retaliation while Jordan says its air defenses were activated to protect its airspace from incoming threats.
Details of the Missile Interceptions Remain Unclear
The precise type of the eight missiles intercepted by Jordan has not been disclosed. There was also no immediate independent assessment of the extent of damage caused by the reported Iranian strikes on US facilities.
The latest developments place Jordan in an increasingly sensitive position as the country seeks to defend its territory while tensions between Iran and the United States continue to escalate across the region.
