Crystal Palace have failed in their attempt to overturn Jean-Philippe Mateta’s red card against Tottenham Hotspur, leaving the striker facing a three-match suspension.
The Football Association rejected the club’s appeal on Tuesday, confirming that the French international will serve the ban following his dismissal during Palace’s 2-0 Premier League defeat to Tottenham last weekend.
Mateta was sent off in the 13th minute after a late challenge on Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven, with his studs making contact with the centre-back’s Achilles tendon.
VAR Review Led to Red Card Decision
Referee Michael Oliver initially showed Mateta a yellow card for the challenge before being advised by VAR official Jarred Gillett to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
During the review, Gillett highlighted the point of contact and the nature of the challenge, explaining that Mateta had caught Van de Ven directly on the Achilles while moving at speed.
He said the contact was nowhere near the ball and met the criteria for serious foul play.
Following the review, Oliver announced that the Palace forward had made full and forceful contact with his studs on his opponent’s Achilles, confirming his decision to upgrade the yellow card to a red.
Former referee Dermot Gallagher, alongside Tim Sherwood and Jay Bothroyd, also supported the decision during Sky Sports’ Ref Watch programme on Monday, with all three agreeing that Mateta deserved to be sent off.
Mateta to Miss Three Upcoming Fixtures
The FA’s decision means Mateta will be unavailable for Crystal Palace’s next three matches against Liverpool, Coventry City and Hull City.
His absence leaves manager Pierre Sage with limited attacking options, as Eddie Nketiah is currently the club’s only available striker.
Jorgen Strand Larsen is also sidelined with an ankle injury, further reducing Palace’s options in the forward position.
Palace Face Liverpool Amid Relegation Concerns
Crystal Palace are scheduled to host Liverpool on Sunday as they continue their Premier League campaign without Mateta.
The Eagles have recorded just one victory in their last six league matches and currently sit in the relegation zone.
The suspension also comes at a difficult period for manager Pierre Sage, whose position is under pressure as he attempts to improve the club’s results ahead of the international break.
