On Friday, Jennifer Garner’s emotional experience volunteering to provide food relief in the Pacific Palisades underscored the devastation caused by the L.A. wildfires.
As the actress, aged 52, joined World Central Kitchen (WCK) to help support the local community, she shared a deeply personal story that brought her to tears.
During her time with chef José Andrés and an interview with MSNBC’s Katy Tur, Garner spoke about losing a friend in the catastrophic fires, which have claimed 11 lives so far.
A Personal Loss and Community Heartbreak
While volunteering, Jennifer Garner shared her grief over the loss of a friend in the fires. She said, “I did lose a friend.
And for our church, it’s really tender.
So, I don’t feel like I should talk about her yet.”
As her voice cracked, she explained that the friend “did not get out on time,” a painful reminder of the dangers many faced as the fires ravaged the area.
Garner also reflected on the widespread devastation, noting that she could easily name a hundred people she knew who had lost their homes.
“I feel almost guilty walking through my house, just thinking, what can I do? How can I help?” she shared, emphasizing how helpless she felt in the face of such destruction.
But despite her sorrow, she acknowledged the strength of the community, saying, “The people are strong, and the sense of the community is strong.
We will look after each other, and that is still here. That is still stronger than ever.”
The Role of World Central Kitchen and Garner’s Efforts to Support the Community
During her interview, Garner explained that World Central Kitchen, alongside her work with Save The Children, would be helping to provide crucial support for displaced families, especially focusing on children and parents.
As she put it, “We’ll be here in a big way very, very soon.”
Garner’s commitment to the cause, along with her years of living in and around the Palisades, drove her to lend a hand in any way she could.
Her conversation with José Andrés revealed that the star, eager to help, approached him with a simple request: “Put me to work.”
Garner also shared her emotional connection to the Methodist Church that had burned down in the fires. She said, “It’s my family’s church… It’s where my kids went to Sunday school.”
Her voice wavered as she described the church as a central hub for the community.
“It’s a gathering point for the entire community, full of really quirky, cool, mostly blue-collar people.
I loved belonging there because wherever I went, I would run into somebody from our community.”
Ben Affleck Joins Garner in Supporting Firefighters and Victims
While Jennifer Garner worked tirelessly to assist those affected by the fires, her ex-husband, Ben Affleck, also responded swiftly to the crisis.
After evacuating his $20.5 million home in Pacific Palisades, Affleck made sure to take Garner and their children to safety.
Fortunately, when he returned, his house had survived, though the area was still under evacuation orders.
Despite the relief, Affleck knew that the situation remained dangerous, with wildfires continuing to spread across Los Angeles.
Devastation Strikes Celebrities and Residents Alike
The fires left a path of destruction not just for ordinary residents but also for many celebrities.
Among the devastated were actors such as Adam Brody and Leighton Meester, whose home was destroyed, as well as Anna Faris, John Goodman, Anthony Hopkins, Billy Crystal, and Eugene Levy, all of whom lost their properties in the blaze.
Additionally, the Hills stars Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag were among those whose homes were wiped out, with Spencer seen somberly looking at the approaching flames before they were forced to evacuate.
As the fires continue to ravage the area, experts warn that the situation remains volatile, with strong winds still a threat.
The devastation has left both residents and celebrities alike grappling with the loss, but the shared sense of community and resilience continues to shine through in the wake of this catastrophic event.
